Garmin Nuvi 255W doesnt show POI icons as I drive

i know other GPSs do it. I would like to see Icons displayed on my 3D view as I am driving.

Is there a setting I am missing?

thanks

zoom in

You have to zoom in to below 300ft to see them on the map screen (I know, it's kinda pointless).

Just tried, didnt work

was standing at the corner with 3 gas stations listed in POIs, zoomed in, saw nothing on my GPS. could I be missing icons? where should they be?

garmin does not have the resolution

Garmins resolution is lacking to allow for cruising with POI's displayed, like a few other companies do in 2d or 3d.
Does anyone really want to drive zoomed in to 300 feet? you can get the poi's to show at that level if you touch an exit or intersection.

Try touching the screen after you zoom in.

oddly enough... that worked!

rather strange, but touching the screen after zooming in worked, but only at 300ft or less. thank you all!

Because the Icons don't show

Because the Icons don't show in 3d. Touching the screen puts it in 2d temporarily.

My Built-in and Custom POI

My Built-in and Custom POI Icons show in 3D Navigation Map as well as 2D Map on my 255W when zoomed in to 300'.

Looks like this thread has been around for awhile. but they all seem to just end. Has anyone figured out what the deal with this is?

The Deal

I think "the deal" is that the Nuvi isn't made to do what some owners want it to do, which is display all built-in POI icons while driving in 3D mode.

The best alternative available is to switch to 2D mode and zoom in very close.

hey gary

Hi Gary,

I have considered this however - other users on this site with 255w have stated they can see the poi's AND I've seen a coworkers achieve this. There must be some validity to this request as others have similar statements on this model on this site.

I have an outstanding case with garmin support and we'll see what they have to say.

Also, switching to a 2D mode and just tapping the screen to make a change does two different things. 2D mode w/zoom does not produce images for me. and tapping the screen does but it does not follow along your route it just does a screen 'stop' w/images.

thanks for the input.

Model

It may be model dependent. All I know is that my 660 won't do it and there are no option settings to change that.

So, if we're building a "yes" "no" matrix, put the 660 in the "no" column.

On my 885T, I can display icons for factory POI in 3D mode, but the Custom Icons don't display at 300 feet. Displaying icons is configurable in that you can tell it which categories to display - I enable gas stations, restaurants, and one or two others. As long as it is not in autozoom, they display. If I'm traveling on the Interstate, they don't display. So a 3rd column in the matrix would be "Depends."

You verified my suspicion. On models like the 885T as you described, factory POI icons CAN be made to display in 3D mode, with additional configuration options to select categories.

My older 660 does not have that capability - period.

So, I guess we do need to build a matrix by model number. I haven't looked, but on Garmin's website where they list the features by model, do they list that as a feature of the 885T. That would probably be too easy. mrgreen

One further note: as this question relates to CUSTOM POIs loaded with icons, I DO see them in 3D mode as I am driving, BUT ONLY if they were originally loaded from POI Loader with a proximity alert. For example, I load the highway rest area file with a 1 mile alert distance and I DO see those icons while driving in 3D mode. On the other hand, I have the Walmart store file loaded with an icon but with NO proximity alert and I DO NOT see those icons while driving in 3D mode, even when the POI is within 50ft of the side of the road I am traveling.

sooo....

alright so here is one for ya along the same lines.

say i use mapsource and put in my proximitiy alerts into gpx upload it to my gps should those show?

or is it ONLY when i use poi loader to set proximiti alerts? which takes precident what i set in mapsource or what i set in poi loader. i'd rather just set in mapsource and then just do the express in poi loader.

ugh mouthful sorry.

reply to me

Alright actually just tested this and you can just express load with POI if you have already set proximity in mapsource - if anyone cares - maybe i'm just new smile

I just went to the Garmin website and read the 885T description and spec pages. I found nothing that remotely sounded like being able to see factory icons while driving in 3D mode. sad

Seems like we will have to build our own model matrix based on member input.

Jordantier1 - sometimes trial and error is the best way to find out how or if something will work. grin

I believe you are correct on the Custom Icons. I only have Rest Areas and cameras loaded with a Proximity. I don't remember Rest Areas popping up, but cameras do. But then I'm not in autozoom on surface streets.

Outhouse

a_user wrote:

Yup, they do on mine. Its hard to forget the little outhouse icon I loaded. laugh out loud

I also have icons loaded with the rlc and speed POI files using the default proximity alerts, but I'm not in an area where I drive by any, very often. We have a couple rlc's in the area and I do remember seeing the icon show up when I drive through the intersection, in addition to the audio alert playing.

I use the outhouse icon for McDonalds. That's about all we use them for now - that and maybe an ice cream cone. But then with no alerts, they don't show.

McDonalds = Outhouse

Interesting relationship!?!

Custom POIs WILL show when zoomed out

Custom POIs WILL show IF (I said IF)
- You have provided the .bmp
- You have made a distance alert
- You have an associated .mp3 (or .wav) file
and
- You are WITHIN THE SET DISTANCE ON THE SAME ROAD

(with tricks you don't even have to be on the same road)

They will show even when zoomed out quite a bit (you don't have to be 200 or less feet zoom level)

It must be me... I'm confused

I thought we were discussing with jordantier1, being able to see icons for the built-in, Garmin/Navteq provided POIs while driving and with the GPS in 3D mode, not the icons for custom POIs?!? confused

Begin The Matrix

OK, so far these are the results of which Garmin models display built-in POI icons while driving and the display mode set to 3D:

660 - NO
885T - YES (selectable by category)
225W - NO
265WT - NO

Colombia , the most beatiful country .

Begin the matrix - continue

Hello All!

Garmin 755 (or 755T, as i got traffic receiver too, but it said 755 on box and on device, I got it from costco) can show both preloaded and custom POI's in 2D or 3D when zoom level is set to 200ft.

Favourites are shown as black dots only, can I associate icons to them too?

Other problem - proximity POI's (redlight cameras), i added custom POI 200 feets from my house, I set proximity alert to 132 feets, walked there and back, nothing happens? all BMP, MP3 and CSV are named the same. BMP shows, but MP3 alert is missing?

Ivan.

Check to see if your proximity points are enabled to alert. You probably want to enable tourguides also.

on the 8x5 series the factory poi display was added in an update a few back it is customizable thru the set up screens.

would be nice if they added to other models. In the update it said it was due to new poi's in the newer maps.
