Oddity with my POI files.

I updated some of my POI files and now, when I go to Extras > Custom POI > DC-Attractions, for instance, I find two DC-attractions.

One is listed like this: ._DC-attractions

Other is listed like this: DC-Attractions.

Tap the screen for the first and get No Matches Found.

Tap the screen for the second and there are all the DC-Attractions, as they should be.

Can anyone dope out from the above what I have done wrong?

Many thsnks,

Just taking a stab in the dark but my guess is you create separate POI files on your Garmin using the gpi renaming method.

If that is true, and you are using a mac, I believe you have to empty the mac recycle bin whenever you delete a gpi file. Otherwise the mac leaves a residual deleted file on your drive.

I don't work with macs, I'm just recalling something I read on a different forum a while back concerning mp3 files appearing with ._

Edit - did a quick google search and it appears its definitely a mac issue and not a recycle bin issue. Here's the first site I clicked on http://www.macintouch.com/readerreports/macosx10_4_2/topic37...

Which file do I delete?

Thanks, GadgetGuy.

If you look here,

http://qkpic.com/ba328

you'll see a screen shot of the contents of my Nuvi 650.

I had loaded the POI onto an SD card, so I deleted them from that card in the hopes that I could load them again and the problem would be gone.

Didn't work.

After deleting them from the SD card, I started the Garmin and the ._files were still there. I remove the SD card, restart the Nuvi; still there.

I presume they must be loaded onto the actual GPS unit. so I opened the Nuvi to look at the list of files.

I checked the size of the downloaded files I had loaded onto the unit and found them to be 3MB in size and so focused on the 3MB file labeled poi.gpi. I copied that file to me desktop, then deleted it from the Nuvi, disconnected the Nuvi from the Mac and started it.

All the POI were still there; those that I had downloaded, still with the ._ files and all the original Garmin shopping, hotel, etc., POI.

Anyone have any idea of which file I need to delete in order to rid myself of the POI I downloaded from this site so I can properly reload them???

Many thanks, as always.

Put the SD card in the unit. Plug the unit into the Mac via USB. Delete any gpi files on either the unit or the card -- probably under \Garmin\POI unless you moved them. Now, before disconnecting the unit, empty the trash on the computer, which also empties the trash on any peripheral devices. Now, eject both devices, and then unplug.

Bless you bentbiker!

That did it. All is well, again.

What with the moving files to the desktop, etc., I forgot to empty the trash.

Many thanks.

Empty trash

Thanks for this. I have tried several times to find the trash on my nuvi and empty it.

It is amazing what help is hiding in answers of other questions.

Does that delete function do

Does that delete function do the same thing for windows based machines?
