Garmin Nuvi 760 Quirks.

I just updated the maps in my Nuvi 760 to the new 2010.1 maps..and now all my Recently found and some of my Favorites have a bunch of Chinese Letters in the Titles.
Also it reset my voice to the Default voice and shut off Dr. Nightmare.
I bought this New in Feb. and the Battery is already not taking a charge... Lucky for me I still have my 660 in my car. So far I am not impressed with the 760. I will call Garmin Tech tomorrow..and see what they say. I have had it on the USB charger for 24 hrs...and it is almost always plugged in in my car. I dont think it has ever had nearly as much battery as the 660..

Battery

My 760 didn't have a good battery. It failed fairly quickly and, after that, never took a good charge or held it. I recently changed my battery out myself and am very pleased with it now.

Your Chinese letter issue is bizarre.......

Hard reset / Clear all user data

Try to hard-reset the unit before calling Garmin. This has been known to clear up odd issues after a firmware update. This is one of the first things Garmin will have you do so be aware. They will also likely have you do it while on the phone with them even if you have already done it.

Hard Reset procedure:

This procedure has been known to delete your favorites so back them up beforehand: From the nuvi drive, copy x:/Garmin/current.gpx to your backup location. After the hard reset, copy current.gpx back to the same folder on the nuvi but rename it temp.gpx (important). On the next power cycle, the favorites will be read from temp.gpx into the non-user accessible memory area on the nuvi where they are actually stored (current.gpx is only a shadowed backup of your favorites)

Hard Reset:

*Note that this will clear all user selected settings on the unit
*Note that a "power-cycle" (or power-on/power off sequence) on the nuvi 8x0/8x5 units consists of removing, then reinserting the battery into the unit. Using the power switch on the unit to power it off only puts it into a "sleep" mode.

Power the unit off. Press and hold (and continue to hold) the bottom-right corner of the screen while powering the unit on. Continue to hold the screen until the "Do you want to erase all user data?" prompt appears. Press "yes" and the unit will reboot. Reset all your location settings and user preferences.

If possible after the hard reset, let the unit sit outdoors in the open for about 30 minutes or so to let the unit re-acquire the satellite almanac data.

Battery replacement

I am not going to to replace the battery on a Non replace able Battery while the unit is under Warranty. If Garmin wants to Replace the Battery...Let it be. I can Save all my Favorites as Waypoints in my Waypoint manager. I could do a hard reset...but that seems a bit much to get rid of some Chinese letters...I can just delete them.
I am very disappointed in there quality lately. I think the competition has has them running..But if they just kept their Quality High....There would be No competition.

hard reset

The hard reset is a simple procedure and is recommended after a firmware update. You won't lose anything but 5 minutes of your time to reset your user preference on the unit and backup/restore your favorites. It will clear the unit of inconsistencies and flakiness such as you're seeing. But it's your choice...

I've had this same issue with odd characters appearing in waypoints that were sent to the Garmin via Garmin Communicator. Very strange...I've seen it on both my Nuvis.

The hard reset can work small miracles. Just make sure you back up your Favorites before you proceed wink

It has a bad battery.

Nuvi 760 Accuracy off

My 760's location is far off. At the dentist office, it was off by 0.4 miles. At a neighbor's house it was off by 500 ft. I plan to do the reset tomorrow to see if that helps. As it is now, the unit is almost useless.

Thanks for info about saving favorites. I was afraid that would be necessary to re-enter all that data.

I find that if my 760 is

I find that if my 760 is plugged into the USB cable on my computer, that it either charges very slowly or not at all. To get a good battery charge you need to use an AC adapter or leave it plugged into a live plug in your car when you're not navigating. Be aware, a lot of cigarette plugs have no power when the car is off.

It has been posted here many times, that specific addresses can and will be "off" because of the way the address ranges are supplied to NAVTEQ. There is nothing wrong with your unit.

It is telling you exactly where you are. It's the map that is off, and will not be corrected.

This is only a tool for you to use to take you to your destination, you have to use that computer located between your ears once in a while, also.

Search here on "address range" for more info, or maybe Motorcycle Mama will post more.

To continue Frank's line of thought, is it showing you 1/2 off of the road you are on or just the address location?

Bluetooth Issue

Hmmm, I'll try this hard reset to see if it will clear up my bluetooth issue. After one of those bluetooth updates a few months ago my 760 keeps saying "Updating Bluetooth Firmware" when I power on the unit. It is annoying but the unit still functions.

Just a thought

Did you update the maps with product downloaded from or supplied directly by Garmin? Illegally downloaded maps (not sayin' you did) could produce some undesirable side effects in a lot of devices.

In addition to the hard reset already described you might try changing voices to be sure you have an English voice selected. Even if it appears you do, switch to something else. Don't know that it would help but it's free and easy.

Shop eBay. I got a duplicate charger and mount for my 760 quite reasonably on eBay. The ones made expresly for the 760 will fit the cradle, not the USB port.

I got the DVD in the Mail

I got the DVD in the mail as I didn't even trust the download from Garmin...as I have heard they have had download glithes..and I aslo like a disc as it is better to load into my Trip and Waypoint manager...

760 accuracy

Last week I posted that my Nuvi 760 was not accurate. It was 0.4 miles off at my dentist's office. I said I would do a reset to see it would make a difference.

I was told that the GPS was right and the maps were wrong.

I did the reset and made the 25 mile trip back to the dentist's office to test the 760. I also used my Streetpilot c550 at the same time.

Result: Both units took me to the the office. Both were correct. Apparently the reset did improve the accuracy of the 760.

When I did the original setup, it was in my driveway which has a couple to large trees blocking a large part of the sky. I did the reset in a parking lot with nothing to interfere satellite connections.

The instructions say the setup should be done in open space. It pays to read instructions.

That hard reset does work

That hard reset does work wonders. Just got this for my wife's trip. Did the full software/firmware updates before testing it out. still took forever to acquire, etc.

Read this threat and did a hard reset (which I thought the unit automatically did after a firmware upgrade) and BOOM.

I walked outside with it to turn it back on and before I could even hit "where to?" it had me acquired, and I now get a strong signal even inside my apt. Good stuff, thanks guys.
