Nuvi 260W vs. 255W

First, both are discontinued.
Is there any reason I should not buy a discontinued model?

Second, Costco has the 260W for $149.99 - Sams Club has the 255W for $169.76.

Which should I buy?

The only real difference I can see is that the 255w has

- shorter battery life - doesn't matter as I'd never use it not plugged in
- 1000 vs 500 way points
-MSN & FM traffic compatible - I don't know that I'd use any service I have to pay for as traffic is not a huge problem in St. Louis.
-ecoroute - don't care
-keyboard choice
-Speed limit indicator
-photo nav

-"Where Am I" - what is this and do you use it often?

BTW, I currently have a Street Pilot C550 that needs new maps -
I usually just use it to get from A-B but I do have some POI's set in, but less than 10.

Thanks.

The 255 has not been

The 255 has not been discontinued. Both are good units. The 255 comes with the faster processor.hot fix and newer features.I use the Where Am I feature when I travel mostly to get gas station locations. In case of a emergency my wife or I would know the location of the nearest hospital if something was to happen. Not to say you can't get the same information from the 260.Just have to do it another way.Where to,points of interest then hospitals.255 you can use the same option or tools, where Am I then Hospitals and also listed nearest police and fuel stations. Some members have reported getting some of the new features on the 260 but not all.It will be the luck of the draw on that. You need to go to https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?cID=134 and compare them. You will have to go to the discontinued page for the 260.

I would get the 255. The

I would get the 255. The speed limit indicator is a great feature. The extra features are worth $20.

I own a 260W so I am biased.

Mine has several of the features mentioned like "Where am I", "Qwerty keyboard". I prefer to use custom POIs in place of waypoints for a lot of things, as they are more customizable. I do have a lot of waypoints but nowhere near 500.

255W because

I bought my very first GPS a few months ago and it was a 750. I found the processeur to be VERY slow, often I would take an exit and on the screen I was still on the highway. Anyways had other minor issues with it and returned it and bought a 255W.

Before buying the 255 I started coming on sites like this one to see what other users had to say about the product. I called companies and spoke to GPS technicians and told them I didn't want 100 options but a RELIABLE unit. Many suggested the 255W.

Today I can honestly say I'm happy having purchased this model. It aquires satellites extremely fast, calculates routes very well(I don't have Ecoroute installed nor do I want it installed), it can be programmed with multiple vias to force a route you want it to take, love the next turn signal and basically does exactly what the GPS was built for.

Of course we have to be completely honest and acknowledge that with every make and model their are pros and cons. The speaker has some minor static at a high volume but the voices are understandable, I purchased mine at Costco and it didn't come with a USB cable but other than that not much else negative to say.

I'm sure their are better units out there but for the price I paid and the solid reliability I've had thus far I would highly recommend the 255W

Sounds good

I bought the 260 18 months ago and really like it. I did not know that the 260W had the qwerty key board. Factor in the cost of updating the maps on the 260 and the Costco price does not seem to bad.

I got my 260W in Dec. 2008.

There may be some improvements in mine that you don't have. So if you are buying one now you should look for those features you want before you buy if possible.

260 VS 255

I have a 1 year old 260 and 4 month 255W. The 260 is still a great GPS. I wanted to upgrade to the new features of the 255W. I still use both of them. The 255W is a better unit.
