Nuvi 360 screen

Hello all... Here's my problem and I hope someone can suggest something for me to fix it.

I have the Nuvi 360 and during the daytime/daylight it's very hard to see the screen. I have tried putting the setting on very bright and very dim and I have no luck with any of the settings. At night time it's FABULOUS but during the day it's very muted lookin and very hard to see. I have to make sure I am not wearing sunglasses at all because if I do I really can't see it.

My eyes are fine so it's not that either.

Does anyone have any suggestions other than get a new one... Thanks! Kenny G.

is this a recent...

developement or has it always been "dim"?

Screen brightness

My first question is:

Do you have "Polarized" sunglasses?

This is a known problem with LCD displays. Without going into too much theory, the screen works by applying a voltage to a cell and causing the liquid to form a polarized cell. Combined with a polarized sheet over top of the cell it blocks the light when polarized.

Any way, the polarized sheet on top is blocking the light, as it is aligned at a different angle than polarized sunglasses.

To verify if this is the problem ----

While looking at the display, with your sunglasses on, slightly rotate your head in a counter-clockwise direction (chin to the right, forehead to the left - keep glasses parallel to screen). The screen will probably get brighter. Now go the other way (chin to the left, forehead to the right) and the screen will probably get darker.

Of course, you could hold them in your hand and do the same thing.

This darkening effect is very agravating when looking at any device with a LCD display, such as when you're pumping gas.

If this is the problem, then you might try rotating the Garmin a little. Just don't get seasick, lol.

Polarized Sunglasses

My polarized prescription sunglasses will absolutely make the display look very dim. I can usually make out the display, but if the sun is at just the right angle, I have to take my sunglasses off.

Did you try the night setting during the day? maybe that will help. let me know.

Settings or Defect

I have no such issues with my Nuvi 360 and my eye sight is BAD. Perhaps the unit has a defect.

Same issue here while wearing sunglasses

+1

I have Nuvi 360 too

I have not noticed any problem and wear both polarized and regular sunglasses in the car (depends on which ones I can find!). I will confess that in harsh sunlight the GPS is hard to read so I just turn the volume up! Really, I fiddled around with location for some time to find one that worked best for differing light and I'm constantly changing the light on the GPS itself depending on the time of day.
I know this is a dumb question but no-one seem to have asked it.....the GPS does change from daylight to nighttime mode and vice versa?
Try using it in someone elses vehicle to see if it works better. (Some rental cars seem to work better than others)

Make a "Hoodie"

Garzmax, you might try making a "hood" out of cardboard. Just form it around the top of your 360 and tape it into place. It should look like the bill of a baseball cap and should shade the display enough to make it a bit more visible.

other suggestions:

Buy a 760...screen is much brighter, vastly superior contrast. (I did a side-by-side comparo of my two units this past week. I have to set the brightness to 40% on my 760 to equal 100% brightness on the 360. There's a big difference.)

Do any of the Nuvi 360 updates alter the rep (refresh) rate of the display?

I found superior viewing if I angled the screen of the 360 up and towards my line of sight to minimize any viewing "angle". This does help a bit.

Newer models have a much better screen

While they all wash out in sunlight, I concur that the 760 screen is a huge improvement over my 350 when it comes to contrast and especially the viewing angle. They made some very significant changes to the LCD mask. I really like my 350, but the newer models have much better LCD technology.

Sunglasses

Buying a new model, is practical only if you're willing or able to part with another $200 or so. Besides, the 760 is now a discontinued product.

I have the same issue, and it's strictly an issue of polarized glasses. However, I can still see it well enough and I let the voice to actually direct me.

Move the 360

I had that problem for a while with my 360. I found that moving the unit to my passenger sun visor was the best way to go. That way it's always in the shadow and your eyes aren't forced to filter out extreme amounts of light to make out shapes.

Where mine is positioned, it's out of the way of the passenger's view and it's not sitting in their face. They can also rotate it so they can see it but I don't like people touching stuff I've set up for my view.

You can buy GPS visor clips on eBay for about $10-$20.00 Canadian. And with the way cars are manufactured these days, it takes about a half hour to install and hide all of the wires behind the A-post/roof interior.

I also have the unit set to night mode with brightness at max.
