Hey guy's i need to know how i can update the maps for this unit,i see garmins web site has no offering for this unit,i know it's a older unit but it's still good works fine and i'd like to keep using it. I updated the soft wear(ver.6.10,audio ver.2.60)just need to find the mapping update now, currant mapping ver. on the unit now is North America NT v8. How old is this ver by the way??
Well, your problem is going to be (I believe) that that unit is not compatible with the downloadable maps only with the disk version of the maps. And it doesn't look like the update version is available on disk only the full version is. The full version disk will be available June 1, 2009.
The current version is version 2010.1.
Version 8 is three annual versions back. It's pretty old, but if it works for you in the areas in which you traveling then that's no problem.
Here's the history. (I think.)
v8 - annual update released spring 2006
v2008 - annual update released spring 2007
v2009 - annual update released spring 2008
v2009.1 - quarterly update released Jan 2009
v2010.1 - quarterly update released April 2009
thank you for your post!!
i NEED to update this because there's some roads not on the unit and some business listed that are no longer open,so yea i need this.
just so were on the same page the disk you talk of that's available tomorrow( June 1, 2009)will have what i need the mapping update?
where can i get it???
Again, it's the FULL version not the UPDATE version so ...
1) It will cost more and
2) You will have to do a little bit more work (ie load the maps from MapSource) to get it to work and
3) It's EXTREMELY likely that the full maps will NOT fit on the unit and you will have to place some on an SD card.
I would absolutely CALL Garmin be 100 PERCENT SURE that it will work before purchasing. I'm not sure if the c320 has the NT version of the maps.
You might be well served to research purchasing a new unit instead. Just my two cents.
Be aware that just because the map is newer doesn't mean that it has the corrected info you want; info can lag by many years. There was previously a preview available of the current map, but I could no longer find it on Garmin's site (maybe someone else can help). It would be a shame to pay for a new map and find that it was no better.
Finally, be aware that the cost of a new full version map will be nearly as much as some new gps units.
so the full ver is everything(maps) not just the updates right?
maps are stored on the SD card on this unit because there's no hard drive? from what i understand, can't one clear the SD card for the new mapping?
just trying to figure out how difficult this is going to be before maybe going and looking at new unit.
thank you, unless i can find an older map(but newer then mine) off ebay?
this thing is three annual versions back you don't think the current update would help? one would think yes by now.
just trying to figure it out here....
one would think yes by now.
One would often be wrong in thinking that. If you search this site, you'll find posts of things still wrong after as much as 7 years.
If you can't find a preview or check a new unit, ask here whether a specific street has been added at coordinates xxx. Just trying to save you some pain.
The unit has space for the maps, however, the new maps take up more space than the older maps.
And now that I'm thinking about it, it's NOT probably going to work loading them from MapSource onto the unit because MapSource does not have the ability to overwrite the preloaded maps.
What you are going to have to do is get an SD card (and you need to check to see what the largest card is that the unit can use. I'm thinking it's 2GB but it might be 1GB.), then if you purchase the FULL VERSION, you will install it to computer, and a program named MapSource will be installed as well.
Then you will open MapSource and use the Map Tool to select the segments of the map that you want to load. The total size will be listed under the Map Tab. Don't create one that is too large.
Be sure you use the unlocking function in MapSource to unlock the maps to that GPS unit.
Then you will connect your GPS unit with the SD card in it and send the maps to the card. IT WILL TAKE A LONG TIME so walk away from the computer for a while.
Then when you start up the unit, go to Settings/Wrench > Map > Map Info and the maps should be listed. Uncheck the old maps.
PLEASE call Garmin to double check your situation before you purchase the maps.
NOTE: If you get a new unit, you will get the most updated maps for free for that unit.
Does the new map updates not put the Map Installer on the computer? I know the 2008 update did, and that's what I used to install North America to my C330, then the rest to the SD card. He should use Map Installer instead of Mapsource.
thank you Motorcycle Mama for that.
good question thats what i was wondering?
can't i just get an newer mapping disk then what i have pop it in the computer and DL to my GPS with a new emplty SD card inside? would that work?
my current SD card holds v8 on a 512 card.
Yes, but according to Garmin's website, the c320 is not compatible with the downloadable version of the 2010 map update.
That's why I'm strongly recommending to CALL Garmin to see what the status of the unit is.
Yes i will be calling for sure...
any thoughts MM on my above statement?
Sure, that would work. That's basically what I said in my post above. The key will be whether you can use the UPDATE version or not.
K..well i'm going to call Garmin and see what they say.
pleas let us know what you find. There are a few of us with old c330's and c340's around. And when you are three or four maps back updates do make a difference.
yea it's a shame it's so hard to get updates for these older units, they work and look like new, perfectly fine and to scrap it just because one can't get updated mapping is crazy!,,but hey what do i know. lol
Garmin said newest mapping ver this unit will take is v2009 - annual update released spring 2008 ,just not capable of anything newer..in so many words he said.
also side note has 128G internal mem HD and can use up to a 2g SD card...
so i guess i'd be gaining something on the old girl.
Will now have to find a copy of the map that wasn't used already....
was looking on ebay theres some,as long as it's got the reg code and unlock code should be good to go and install right?
Just a little update here the easiest way i found out to update this 320 is to just pick up a SD card with the updated mapping plug it in and go,i now have a currant North America NT 2010.10 v13.1 installed.
the only down fall is on the 320's you need to have the SD card in for it to work,it was that way with the original v8 too, dunno why that is but it is..
