Custom Alert Sounds

Hi all -

Have a Garmin Nuvi 650 which I can hook up either to a Mac or a PC. Lucky me.

I have read Motorcycle Mama's instructions on how to do this but got stumped on the first step:

- Rename your MP3 EXACTLY the same name as your POI file except for the file extension (the three letters after the dot).

Looking at the contents of each folder in my Nuvi 650, I cannot seem to find the sounds associated with speed camera and red lights

I suspect that changing these alert sounds is not supported on all Garmin units.

Is my Nuvi 650 one such unit or am I looking in the wrong place?

Thanks,

You need to download (to your computer) whatever sound you wish to have as your Custom Alert sound.

THEN you would rename THAT FILE (on your computer) in accordance with your Custom POI file. And place that files all in the same folder (on your computer) when you run POI Loader.

The 6xx supports Custom Alert sounds.

'Nother question on Custom Alert Sounds

Hi Mamma,

When I downloaded the Red LIght and Speed Cameras data, it came in the form of a folder named :

3tj-enforcement-cameras

In it were two files:

Redlight-Cameras.csv
Speed-Cameras.csv.

I downloaded from the POI Factory the custom alert sound:

Redlight-Cameras_2.mp3

May I trouble you to confirm I have this right:

Rename the Redlight-Cameras_2.mp3 file as Redlight-Cameras.mp3 and place it in the folder 3tj-enforcement-cameras.

Many thanks for your patience,

Yes, you need to rename one of the files so it matches the other. I doesn't matter which. However, you shouldn't have numerals (eg 2) in the file name as that will be interpreted by POI Loader as SPEED information.

Be sure that you are not ADDING the file extension when you rename the files. Doing so will result, for example, in a file named Redlight-Cameras.mp3.mp3 which will not work.

Also, if you want a Custom Audio alert for the Speed Camera file, you will need an additional MP3 file in the folder named to match that file.

And lastly, you should be sure that you have unzipped the Custom POI file into a folder on your computer. And you can rename that folder to whatever you wish.

i wish i would have looked

i wish i would have looked into a different model. possibly one with mp3 capabilities and bluetooth.

You don't need mp3 capability to use custom audio alerts. You can substitute wav files. Lot of posts here on how to do it.

Got it & some more alert sounds

Thanks, Mama -

Think I got it.

I liked the Australian gal's voice warning for the speed cameras, but didn't like any of those for the red-light ones, so I went onlline and found a bunch of .mp3 files from Monty Python's Search for the Holy Grail. If you are a Monty Python file, these will make you double over laughing.

I'd be happy to upload some of them to the Sounds library, but I wonder is there is any sort of copyright problem with them.

Any idea?

If there is a problem uploading them to the Sounds library here, then any of you who would like to download them directly from the Monty Python site to use on your unit, you can get them here:

FWIW, I am going to use the "I f*rt in your general direction" with the fake French accent for my red-light alert. ;~>
