Legislation Spotlight: New Speed Technology Devices Approved For Use
Alberta Police can now use new intersection safety devices to reduce speeds and increase safety on our roads, thanks to amendments to the Traffic Safety Act.

This new technology tracks the speed of a vehicle as it proceeds through a location. Tickets can be issued for speed and/or red light infractions. Tickets will be sent to the registered owner of the vehicle (no demerits will be issued). The penalty for a red light offence is $287 and the penalty for speeding can range from $57-$89 for driving 1-15 km above the speed limit, to a mandatory court appearance with fines issued at the discretion of the Court for driving over 50 km above the speed limit.

The focus of Intersection Safety Devices is to encourage safer driving habits. Enhanced speed enforcement has been identified as a priority by Police and Alberta Traffic Safety Plan stakeholders (view the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan at http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/3112.htm), and research shows intersection safety devices help to reduce collisions and casualties by reducing speeding and red light violations.

While these amendments to the Traffic Safety Act came into force on January 1, 2009, it is up to municipalities to decide whether they want to start using these intersection safety devices. Law enforcement agencies planning to use these devices must first provide a three-month public awareness period, with warning tickets being issued during the last four weeks of the awareness period. Municipalities who have completed the three-month awareness and warning phase may issue tickets for violations under this new program effective April 1, 2009.
