Mexico Maps

Made a mistake. We're down in Mexico and thought we wouldn't need the Garmin so we didn't spend the $80 for the Mexico maps on SD card. Now we're going to do some unplanned trips and we have to do it the old fashioned way....use a paper map ;-( Oh well, we will know better next time. Yes, we're spoiled using the Garmin for our travels!

Good Luck!

Have fun in Mexico!!

I have seen the Mexico maps and think they have a bit of work still needed

Mexico Maps

You can download the free world map which will show you the "main" roads for all over the world. I put mine on the memory stick and it does work fine.
It is the Garmin World Map and has two files.
GMAPsupp.img at 31,824 kb
GMAPsupp.PDB at 1 kb
My Garmin 260 will read the built-in map as well as the world map.

either...

Either way it goes, the paper maps aren't that great or the gps files.

Here's the thread

Thanks.
Strangely. I get a 25 meg exe file when I follow the link. That starts to extract to the img file, but then wants to contact something else on the Internet. I'm not sure what is going on here, but I sure don't want "maps" that I download to connect to the Internet. Will do a bit more experimenting in a virtual machine, but this looks like a potential security nightmare.

If you still haven't acquired the World Wide Base Map from Garmin, you can go to this site and download the "exe" file but do NOT run the file. http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=461
You will download this file:
iQue3600World-WideBasemap_301.exe
Create a folder on your memory card/stick titled GARMIN.
After you have downloaded the above file, use Winzip or WinRar (both free downloads if you don't have them-I used Winrar) to extract the 2 files needed. When you run Winrar, find the above file and you will note a folder titled WORLDWIDE. If you open the WORLDWIDE folder, you will see the 2 files you need to extract. Highlight them and extract them directly to your memory card's GARMIN folder or to your hard drive and then copy to your memory card afterwards.
My Garmin 260 uses both its internal map and the additional map from the memory stick. I have played with the world wide map and find that only the major roadways are displayed but it is better than nothing and the price is right.
Remember, do not try to extact the files needed by running the exe file, you have to extract the needed files manually.
If you have a problem and would like the files emailed to you as an attachment (if they will go through considering their size)I would be willing to send them to you.
Good luck.

Got it, thanks. Don't know that I'll ever really use it, but as you say the price is right and better than nothing if I do find myself somewhere that the internal map does not cover.
