Question to you Nuvi users ..

I asked this of Garmin as question 2 of 2 but they only answered question #1.

Do you know if it is possible to have the nuvi 255 screen orient itself properly in zoom out mode when traveling?

I was traveling South East the other day and the zoomed out map was upside down. It showed my car icon traveling north (to me) with the Atlantic Ocean to my right. I'm used to the Mio that zooms out to the proper orientation (again to me) of north up but shows the road in front of you when it zooms back in.

My assumption is that the Mio way seems more logical to give the actual path of travel along with position along the route vs a route traveling up all the time.

Anyone else see this or know how to change it?

Thanks!

North Up or Track Up

I am not sure, but maybe you could provide a few more details. I know that I only use 2-d, track up for that very reason. If you are going south using the North Up, then the display is opposite of what you do.

So, are you in 2-d or 3-d?

He is in either track up or 3d. Zooming out on a Garmin will not automatically go to North up. It has to be manually changed in Tools, Settings, Map.

I think he had to be

I think he had to be in 2D North up. He was traveling southeast, so that is the only thing that makes sense.

North up

Yes, if he was going southeast but the ocean was on the right, the map orientation had to have been North Up.

The Nuvis actually do what he was asking about, just a little differently. If we browse the map, it's always North Up. And then it switches back to whatever you have it set for when it goes back to the route display mode. (North Up, Track Up, 3D)

Re - Question to you Nuvi users ..

It sounds like you had the Nuvi set to Track Up, which orient your view based on your direction, instead of being a North up view.

If what your asking is, can the Nuvi change the display method from Track Up to North Up as it automatically zooms in and out. I don't know of any function that does that in the Nuvi line.

You can manually change it by going to Tools / Map / Map View / - and changing from Track Up to North Up.

I have a Nuvi 750 but I believe the directory structure is the same.

just did it for me

I just put my nuvi (250, newer hardware with micro-SD slot, 4.2 firmware) into simulator mode and gave it a destination that was towards the south (to get the map to orient that way. I'm using 2D, track up mode (3D is cute eye candy but useless for driving IMHO).
I was able to zoom out much further than I expected without reorientation. even saw most of Florida on the top of my screen, but when I did the final zoom-out step the map of the USA was oriented like it is in all of the geography books, not in the direction of travel.

Re - just did it for me

Thanks Frovingslosh, that handy to know.

I had never tried zooming all the way out.

Thanks for your replys!

I was in 3D mode. Driving south on the Eastern Seaboard the Atlantic Ocean needs to be on the left or your in trouble! grin

I tried the North Up and it gave me a 2D view and the road view on the display was sideways. The road view also was not the same close up view as it is in 3D view but I do have it zoomed out somewhat in 3D view.

I personally like the 3D view so as I approach roads it shows me the way to go. Living in Jersey we have circles (roundabouts) and as my name says given 2 roads I will always take the wrong one!

My friend who has a Garmin 700 series always has his map in 3D mode and it doesn't seem to zoom out. I am assuming that the auto zoom out feature gets activated when you zoom out in the "close up" mode - I'll have to play around some more with the settings.

Thanks for the responses, I guess the thing to do is NOT compare what the Garmin does to the Mio and/or adjust the Garmin to operorate the most logically for me.
