Suction cup destroyed

My Garmin C330 was mounted on the windshield for a little over 2 months. When I went to remove it in order to transfer my GPS to another car, I left a lot of the cup on the windshield and the the cup doesn't work any more. Garmin (God bless 'em) are sending me another cup and complete holder - gratis!
But how do I make sure I don't bake the new one onto the windshield? Since it's winter in Maryland, that windshield will get a lot hotter come summer... Anyone have a solution? Thanks!
