We currently only have three states featured for this chain. I would love to see a full USA file for this store.
Who wants to lead this project using this list http://www.joann.com/joann/catalog.jsp?CATID=stores?

Joann

I have done ones around the Cincinnati area for TomTom. They are broken into 2 files, and include parts of 3 states. (Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.) Would uploading these files help with the project?

Store list link

Your store list link appears to lead to nothing.

Do you have an excel file list? If you do I would be more then happy to create the file for you.

Otherwise I'll try to find one. My wife loves this store.

VT stores

Miss POI,

I have the VT stores, all 4 of them, in an excel file. What is the proper way to post them for addition ??

thanks

you can make a POI File:

you can make a POI File: http://www.poi-factory.com/garmin-csv-file-format and submit it to the site. I will link it to the other files from my end.

Hi, I'm new here. smile Is someone working on getting all the Joanns listed or are people still needed? I'm in CA and I'd love to have a POI even if I have to make it myself. smile I'll learn how to do it if help is needed.

Hey I submitted a Joanns CA file a week or so ago. Its still not showing on the site, I can't find any sort of link to it...how do I find out if there was something wrong with it so it was rejected, or what happened to it? I'd like to know if I'm making the files right before I submit any of the others I've done. Thanks. smile

Miss POI gets busy and sometimes if you need info on a file you submitted it may be easier and quicker if you send her a email and ask that way. I dont think she scans all the different threads that are going on. She may have it in her to do file.

I apologise and understand, its just that when I submitted it it said it would only take a couple days so when it still wasn't up and I hadn't heard anything I thought it had either been rejected or lost. Thanks for the response. smile

I would love to see this project completed also. Instead of using the above link, I think this link *might* make it bit easier...

http://www.joann.com/static/StoreLocator/alabama.html

Yep, you would have to change the state each time. BUT it's a much easier list to run a excel web query on.

VA and WV

Just uploaded a Jo-Ann Stores file for the two Virginias. 28 stores total.

If you look further down the list you will see something like 13 or 16 locatong by state for joanns. Also I thinke it was VA WVA that was just added. Their site is a hard one to follow and get tje info as you have to keep changine states and also watch that you don't get the same store twice.

Jo-Anns Fabrics Arizona

Hi,
I'm not sure if anyone is updating the file but the store location in Yuma is wrong, it's possible the store has recently moved???
The correct location is N32 42.280 W114 36.310

I saw this thread and realized it had been a while since I updated TN and GA, so I looked. Sure enough, there was a store I needed to add to each state. I will be doing that after this post, but wanted to know how to get a whole state as I have to do it by serially adding cities on the "search".

I tried the link for "alabama" but got the message

Quote:

Invalid URL. Please continue by going to our Home Page...

which, when followed, took me to http://www.joann.com/
which is where I was working.

What did I do wrong?

By the way - we ought to standardize on the name. I think the legal name of the company is
JO-ANN STORES, LLC
even though the website is joann.com

Also, the logo seems to imply a hyphen by the way the crossbar on the "A" of "Ann" is allowed to be in the space between "Jo" and "Ann".

When I follow the link
http://www.poi-factory.com/node/19280

I find this

Quote:

Jo-Ann Fabric NM
Jo-Ann Fabrics California
Jo-Ann TN
Joann Fabric Vermont
Joanns Fabrics - New York
Joanns Fabrics Alabama
Joanns Fabrics Alaska
JoAnns Fabrics Arizona
Joanns Fabrics Arkansas
JoAnns Fabrics Colorado
Joanns Fabrics Delaware
Joanns Fabrics Idaho
Joanns Fabrics Illinois and Wisconsin
JoAnns Fabrics Oregon
JoAnns Fabrics Utah
JoAnns Fabrics Washington

This does not include my GA but does include some that are not in the "Alphabetical" list, like Oregon.

Now I know that JM and Angela do not like to impose naming conventions on volunteer contributors of FAQ and POI files, but maybe all of us who have Jo-Ann files could agree on at least the first word. It may make sense to add Fabric Store and I will try to accomplish this when I upload.

What do other Jo-Ann maintainers think?

John

Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft-US

I have an Excel spreadsheet of 846 (all?) Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft locations in the US. The data include latitude, longitude, name, address1, address2, city, state, postalcode, and phone. The latitudes and longitudes have not been verified, but match the ones used on the store locator map.

I will send the file to someone willing to take ownership of a Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft-US POI.

send it to me, please

Status update

When I agreed to take the Jo-Ann file, I had no idea how much work that would be required to get it in the shape I would want to have if I were to download any POI file.

I took some time to verify that the stores in the file I got were still open and added stores that were new. I wound up with 849 stores.

Unfortunately, the joann.com "Store locator" facility is not at all accurate. The location they show may be several miles from the actual store. Their maps are powered by "Where 2 get it" which I have never come across before but it claims to serve 550 "brands". Often I find that the "location" seems to be on one side of a street (based on the most zoomed in view of the Jo-ann Store Locator map)when it turns out to be on the other side.

Whether the problem is with "Where 2 get it" coordinates or with the "addresses" that Jo-Ann uses for its stores, I do not know. Part of the problem is that what they use as an address is a "proxy" for a (usually) outdoor strip mall. That means that the actual front door of the store is fairly far off the street (and as I just said, sometimes on the other side of the street).

I have tried to communicate with Jo-Ann management but have been unable to get anyone to respond to me. On the other hand, the people in the stores themselves are very helpful. I wind up having to call about every 10th store to get an accurate location. Once I know the stores around them, I can pinpoint the "front door"

What causes the need to call is that Jo-Ann seems to like to put new stores in buildings that once housed another company that went out of business or closed some particular store. You often can't get a current "street view" of the new store because Google is several years behind on average even though they are continually updating their views. This is how I first discovered that the location was on the other side of the street. I would ask where was this store relative to, say, Goody's and the store representative would say "Oh, that store is across the highway. We are in the mall with Big Lots".

Anyway, it has been taking about an hour to verify 8 to 10 stores - getting the coordinates for the front door as well as the driveway/intersection which will get you into the shopping mall regardless of the direction in which you are traveling on the major approach road. I note that there have been several instances where there is a divided highway such that you have to go a ways past the mall and do a U-turn to get to the other side so you can enter the mall.

Back to work on Jo-ann.

Jo-Ann's response to my e-mail

I sent an email saying

Quote:

I have emailed several times before and have not had a reply. The store in New Philadelphia OH encouraged me to keep trying because they realize that their store in NOT at 400 Mill St SE but rather at 400 Mill Ave SE (about 8 miles away). the actual coordinates of this store are at -81.439991,40.480869. The coordinates that the store locator site produces are -81.40082,40.39914.

They responded
