Where should I put new POI files?

Hello everyone, I'm new to this site as well as new to using GPS devices. My first device is a Garmin c510 which I bought "refurbished". It has worked great for me so far. I have even been able to install [from this site] a customised POI file. Aren't I clever! The POI was a listing of state parks. It installed just fine with no problems at all, using the POI Loader from Garmin. Being new to all this of course I was cautious and loaded the file twice, once on the unit itself and once again on the SD card. So it is located in two places. My question is...Where SHOULD I have placed it, and can I remove the "extra" file? If so, in future, where should I install the POI files which I want? Thank you in advance for any help you may offer.

You can load it either place...

Open the sd card folder or the C510 folder: Garmin>poi and delete "poi.gpi", just load it to one place.

Don't you have it stored in 3 places... Computer, Garmin, and SD card? I would think that having one on the computer and one on the Garmin would be backup enough. As to where you store it for the Garmin... I think that is totally up to you. All your POIs are compiled into one file for use by the Garmin. I personally like them stored on the Garmin. You should have plenty of storage space on the Garmin for you POI file. I haven't read anything that would suggest storing in either place would be best. I have read issues people are having with large SD cards and near full SD cards, so I would keep that in mind.

Hi jaisaii,

First of all, welcome to the poi-factory...

As far as where to load your POI files, you shouldn’t have any problem loading them on to your unit.

Long story short, I would say load all your poi files on your unit. If and when your C530 reaches it’s capacity (and I doubt it will), then you can load any additional poi’s, on your SD card.

HTH (hope that helps)

Thanks Tailspin but it's a c510 not a c530 wink

Where to store POI's

I thinke that is up to you and how much you change and add to them. If you use a card you don't need to be near the gps and you can work on them all the time then use poi loader I store all mine on a card again personal preference. good luck.
