Radar detector with preloaded POIs on it

When it comes to the best radar detector out there, by far it is the Escort 9500ix radar detector. Not only does it detect all forms of radar and laser the cops use to lock on to your speed, but now it is the first to come with preloaded Poi's of red light and speed camera locations. I personally use this radar detector and have not received a ticket in months. Compared to before when I would get a ticket for something every other month. This radar detector really makes me "Mr. Invisible" to the cops.

Take a look at the link and see what I am talking about. It is a great investment for people that get pulled over for speeding a lot.

It appears that any updates to cameras is additional cost uploads.

High priced radar detector

Whether the Escort 9800ix is the best detector or not is up in the air. I personally like detectors made by Beltronics. Their GX65 has GPS and can also alert you to speed and redlight camera locations.

Not to pick on your statement, but the same internet eTailer states "the Beltronics STi Radar Detector is the #1 rated windshield-mounted radar detector in the world."

No matter which detector is the "best", I would hope for $500 it keeps you from getting a speeding ticket.

What is the cost for updates?

What is the cost for updates? I didn't see the cost for the monthly updates listed.

"Escort 9500ix is loaded with the latest GPS coordinates of photo speed traps and red light cameras when shipped. After purchase, you can optionally update NEW PHOTO SPEED TRAP locations each month by USB updates through your computer when connecting to the Trinity GPS data base"

I am not sure if I need a radar detector while have all of red light & speed cameras POIs in my Garmin c530.

You don't have to be a speed demon to use protection!

You know what, Radar detectors are nice to have, because your not alway looking for redlight or speed cameras. Sometimes your just cruising down the road and all of a sudden you look at you speedometer and see that you have been day dreaming (you all have done it)and need to bring the machine back down within the speed limit. I'm neither a light runner or a speeder but when it happens it good to have the bases covered.

Absolute
do you load the redlight poi?

cars today have cruise control.set and forget it

Kids ask sometime why the highest speed of cars is not 70 mph

I couldn't answer because I have the question in my mind. Yes, why the highest speed of cars is set to 200 mph or 260 mph by factory default not 70 mph? If the highest can go is 70 mph then nobody will be speedy.

A lot of cars now do have their top speed electronically governed, but that speed is usually much higher than 70 mph.

Why? Probably the main reason is sales. People simply do not want their speed limited to something like that and if an automobile manufacturer did that, a lot of people would buy a product from someone else.

There are other reasons also. for one thing some states have a 75 mph speed limit, which means you can reasonably do around 80 without being stopped. So why not make all cars top out at 80? Because there are times on the road when you reasonably have to exceed the speed limit to avoid an accident or get out of trouble. Runaway trucks that have lost their brakes are not all that uncommon in mountainous western states. How would you like one bearing down on you from behind when you're limited to 70 mph and there is a place for you to pull over a few hundred yards down the road?

You're probably right RhythmTip. If this guy was getting a ticket every other month, he should have lost his license by now.

I have no radar detector and tend to drive on the fast side and I haven't had a ticket in 15+ years.

I have no doubt that the Escorts are good units. The reviews usually rate the top one between them and the Valentine1 units. The Beltronics units also seem to rate fairly high.

To get off subject a little and as a side note, when I go into town the highway goes from 2 lanes into 4 lanes and is mostly light residential. Previously the speed limit went from 55 mph rapidly to 45 mph and then rapidly to 35 mph. As it was a light use road, the cops frequently hid out on the side and wrote tickets. Recently they kept the speed limit 55 mph way past where it originally went down to 45 and to 45 way past where it originally went down to 35. I haven't seen any cops hiding out on the road since the speed limit went up. To me this is great and much more reasonable speed limit, as you rarely see speed limits increase. In the same vein part of the main road in town they reduced from 4 lanes to 2 and the speed limit from 35 to 25.

try it first

You can get both the Escort and Bel with a 30 day return policy. I tried both and kept the RX65, because I got too many false positives from door openers and such. Both were about equal in sensitivity to radar-I had the fortune to find a cop running a speed trap, so I cruised by him a half dozen times trying the Escort (I don't remember which specific Escort it was) and the RX65. We have many speed traps up here in the small bedroom communities that surround Chicago-I'm not a habitual speeder, but there are a lot of places with sudden changes in the limit and cops on the other side of the sign.

Electronically limited top speed

I had heard in the past that manufacturers will electronically limit the top speed so that higher-rated tires do not have to be provided. Who wants to tell an old couple that their new Buick LeSabre has to have Z-rated tires put on it. Yes, they could have other tires put on it, but on the off chance that the tire blew because of a speed that is too fast for the tire, who is liable?
