2009 loaded on Nuvi 760 but I get "CAN'T UNLOCK MAP" error on the device

There will be a lot of questions about this and what you did or didnt do but the first thing is

Are you registered with garmin with the unit
Where did you get the 09 maps at. Disk OR download

this can be a start for you.

Nope not reg'd with Garmin and I opted to pay to download the file I didn't order the disk..only took like 18hrs to download....big file

You should have gotten a number to register it with ... Garmin will unlock the map for you..

I had the exact same problem with my 760....loaded 2009 maps (Update DVD) and nada.

I called Garmmin and a very pleasant tech rep asked if I had registered the 760. (yes)

She then asked if she could have my permission to to access my computer, and when I granted she asked that I connect the 760 to the computer via the USB cable.

As I watched the monitor she accessed the Nuvi and checked the unlock code file on the unit, mentioned that it matched my registration and had me restart the 760.

Nada...zip...nothing....same cannot load map error.

She then deleted the unlock file on the Nuvi and installed another (a file that contained the same registration information) and asked that I restart the Nuvi.

Bupkis....same error

Then she asked me..."do you have an SD card in the slot?" I replied, 'sure do."

Ok, please remove the SD card.

Ta Da!!! I removed the SD card and the Nuvi fired right up perfectly.

Why? She wasn't certain but that Garmin is aware of the problem. She then asked me to reinstall the SD card and restart the 760.

Nuvi fired up just as it's supposed to.

I was on the phone with Garmin for maybe, 10 minutes and problem resolved. Good on ya, Garmin!

So, if you had an SD card installed when you loaded the 2009 maps, that may be the cause....Try removing it...and try restarting. If it still fails to load call Garmin and let them have access to your system and hopefully they can repair the unlock file.

And BTW, yes, I did update the FW to ver 4 prior to loading the 2009 maps...so this may be another glitch with version 4.

I believed you have to register with Garmin in order to unlock the map. I could be wrong but I think that is the way so Garmin server can unlock the map.
