How Risky is this? (Map Update)

I Have a NUVI250, that came with CN2008NT. I Have City Navigator 2009 NT on an SD Card, and I'm using it with the 250, no problem.

What would happen if I copy the map data from the SD Card to the Base Unit? Would I bugger it up, or would over writing the data, replace the 2008 Maps on the GPS with the 2009 Maps, allowing me a fre SD Slot for POIs?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't want to ruin my Garmin, by trying this blind.

Thanks.

It won't work

The map data on your SD card has a related license file on the SD card that is tied to the ID of the SD card. So simply copying the map data to your Nuvi 250 flash drive will NOT work.

You will have to get the official 2009NT map update DVD and then use Mapsource to transfer the update to your Nuvi 250 device.

Ok, but doesn't Mapsource

Ok, but doesn't Mapsource just copy the new maps ONTOP of the old? It doesn't replace them right?

So I have have 2008 and I Install 2009, it will keep 2008 and add on 2009? Am I right?

I really want to get rid of 2008 and replace with 2009.

.

The maps on the preloaded SD cards are LOCKED TO THE CARD. They cannot be used with MapSource. And they will not work if you copy them to a GPS unit or to another card.

Mapsource will overwrite old maps

You won't have enough disk space on your Nuvi to have both the maps, hence Mapsource will overwrite the older maps.

Motorcycle Mama

Motorcycle Mama is correct. If you purchased the SD card version, you stuck with that card for ever. No mapsource no rom. The good part is that you can put it to any unit though, making it easier to swap between unit or make a quick sell.

Thanks a lot for the

Thanks a lot for the replies.

One thing that occurs to me is to de-select the 2008 maps

While using the 2009 maps on the sd card. There could be problems caused if both are selected... You'll confuse your nuvi.... rolleyes

I just updated my nuvi 660

I just updated my nuvi 660 with 2009 nt. First, it removed my 2008 nt from my unit, then it installed the new 2009 nt on to my unit..it took over 2 hours.
