I keep my Linux and Windoze boxes separate (I don't use Virtualization), and have never tried plugging in my Nuvi into a Linux machine. All the newer Garmin GPSrs are Mass Storage Class, so they'd probably just mount as FAT32 in Linux. Since Garmin tools provide the most support for Windows (MapSource, POI loader, Web Updater...), and I have access to both types of machines, I wouldn't even bother to try to tinker with the Nuvi through Linux.

Unfortunately I can only do the virtualbox thing My comp came preloaded from DELL with Linux.. I have changed distros.. in favor of LinuxMint.. but I have had no real need / desire to use windows. Until now sad This is truly disappointing.

Linux Runs on the New Garmins

Well, the good news for the Linux crowd is that the Garmin Nuvi 8xx and 5xxx series actually run Linux internally instead of the VxWorks or base-level loop that the older units ran, and you can get the open source here:

http://developer.garmin.com/linux/

I haven't downloaded to see what's there or not, but I doubt that a complete working system can be built from the tarballs. Maybe just the kernel.

Can't wait for hacks (from people who have time on their hands).

Great news indeed this should really help speed up the devices.. to be certain.. tho doesn't help me in my current situation.. sad I guess I will have to do something to remedy this but what and how to go about it.. LOL, I bought my new Linux PC from DELL to get away from the Windows TAX.. and I hate being locked into proprietary formats and monopolistic companies.

* Sigh * I wish more people would investigate Linux, it's happening slowly. Ubuntu and it's spin off's like Linux Mint.. make it extremely nice and easy

As a webmaster, typically I see 3% max of visitors on any kind of Linux distro. Sad, but true.

I am running Kubuntu Hardy

I am running Kubuntu Hardy on my desktop with a dual boot to Windows XP. My laptop runs the same Linux distro but with WinXP running in Virtualbox. I have gotten almost all of my applications running in Linux but so far no go on one of my favorites which is the Google Map poi downloader. It is a Firefox plugin I think.

Are there enough Linux users here to justify adding a Linux topic area in the forums?
