Speaking of Garmin's 2009 map updates

Speaking of Garmin's 2009 map updates, I cant seem to figure out how to determine what's built in to my Garmin nuvi 760 unit. bougt it in late june 2008. I know the 2009 updates were available at the time, cause they kept showing up when I did websearches for reviews of the Nuvi line.

I did buy the Garmin Topo 2008, and City Navigator 2008, and exported a large section of both to my unit. THose are the only ones showing up when i check the map info in settings. No reference to the built in maps.

So Im wondering, should I bother with the 2009 update?
Im thinking city navigator is pretty much an extended version of the built in maps, so i should probably just worry about keeping City Navigator up to date.

Am i right or wrong?

When did you purchase your gps?

It should have come with city navigator 2008 on it. You may even be eligable for a free update, especially if you just purchased 2008, I would call garmin and ask...

No need to buy

There was no need for you to purchase the City Navigator 2008 maps. They came pre-loaded onto your 760. Since you just purchased it you should have been eligible for the free update to the 2009 maps. You need to go to the Garmin site and register the unit to be eligible for the update. It's a bummer that you purchased maps you already had on the unit.

go to http://my.garmin.com to register your unit and check on the update.

CALL Garmin and discuss this with them.

Got my 760 few weeks ago. It came with 2008 Map. I registered 760 with garmin web site. I was supposed to see free map update link on my account page. Called garmin. They quickly fixed it and the free 2009 map update link showed up. I think you get free map update for six months from the date of purchase.

Assuming you bought the Nuvi in the US, North America City Navigator is the bulit-in map.

Did you use an SD card, or the internal memory when exporting the maps from MapSource? If you used an SD card, take the card out and power up, you should see only your built-in map version on the maps screen. If you used the internal memory, you might want to re-export just the portion of Topo 2008 you are interested in. This will overwrite the GMAPSUPP.IMG file in your Nuvi with just Topo 2008. I suspect the reason you don't see the built-in map is that portion of City Navigator 2008 you downloaded into GMAPSUPP.IMG is overriding your built-in 2008 map (in GMAPPROM.IMG). The Nuvi firmware is probably confused by the fact that there are two identically named maps.

Mix of sd card and internal memory

Ya know, I've got West COast of both City and Topo internal, and East Coast of City and Top on the sd card.

And for those who are wondering, I did not get a dvd with my Nuvi. I do have need of Mapsource on my PC, mainly for importing places i've marked the location of with the GPS, so the purchace of CIty Navigator is not a total waste.

just bought it

bought it in late June....

Thought i had already registered it. Just checked my garmin account, found out i hadn't. Which is a good thing, because as it turns out the free update needs to be "ordered" within 30 days, but now that I've ordered it, i have 90 days to download it.
