on the nuvi370, i go to
on the nuvi370, i go to where to - favorites - select home - select edit and enter my home phone
nuvi 2460LMT

the person has a Nuvi 200W/ Nuvi 760

Sounds like you have run afoul of the weirdness associated with the home phone number and the nüvi 760. If you use the area code and include any spaces or dashes the stupid phone number is truncated. This made me crazy for a while.
