Free 2009 Map Upgrade.

This worked for me, I told Garmin I've been having intermittent problems with my nuvi 760 freezing up. I mailed it in, and in a week they mailed me back with a refurbished unit with a different serial number. I then regestered it and it came up as a newly purchased unit. And i got a FREE map update, i had my 760 since xmas.

too much trouble

I think that is way too much to go through for a free map update. I would never trade in my Nuvi for a refurbished one just for that. You never know what you're getting with a refurbished unit.Just my 2 cents.

Glad it worked out

Not everything works out so well. I hope the referb works like the Energizer Bunny!

My refurb works well...

Picked up a refurb Nuvi 650 from a retailer on eBay for $214 shipped. Seemed like a good deal to me. Came with a year warranty. Registered it and got the 2009 update as well. Only had it 2 months, but not problems

Hey Larry, I would have definitely purchased additional warranty from SquareTrade, which is way less than what one would pay through Best Buy or any other store.

After little over a year of use, my last Nuvi 680 stopped accessing satellite one day for some unknown reason. Luckily, I had Product Service Plan from Best Buy, so I went to local store, and walked out with a Nuvi 780 (and a BIG smile) after about 10 minutes; they did not have 680 in stock.

I think that one has only 30 days to get the ST warranty though.

Moon

Extended warranty not offered

Moon, the one-year is from Garmin. EBay seller did not offer an extended warranty, but I normally do not purchase these anyway. Just checked SquareTrade and they are asking $26 for 1 yr, $12 for a second. I will see if this is after the Garmin warranty and may consider it at this cost. Thanks for the tip.

I am real glad to hear about your 680 to 780 replacement. This was a great service to you. I can only guess just how big of a smile...

But I guess we are getting off topic here.

I think refurbed units are

I think refurbed units are better than new ones for the simple reason that they have been back to the factory and put through an even more stringent quality control check than origanlly. But that is just my oppinion.

Not a fan of refurbs. They

Not a fan of refurbs. They always have a short warranty.

I stay away from refurbs...

When I am shopping on EBAY or somewhere similar, and I see an item that has 100 REFURBED units available; I will stay away from that product--NEW or Refurbed.

Seems to me that if there are so many items that have had to be repaired, that there MUST be some underlying reason for it.

Just my two cents.
