Since it pertains to a nuvi 680, I've put my response here...

I have been learning things about my nuvi680 by reading from this site for a couple weeks now.

I have had trouble downloading poi (Smoky Mountains) and getting this data into my unit. I just found out the Garmin has a "POI Loader" application!! I have installed and will begin trying it.

I tried to use MapSource on my new notebook PC but I get this error message: "Mapsoure could not find any installed MapSource map products. Please install one or more MapSource map products at start MapSource again."

To work around this, I used the POI file I downloaded from this site, and instead, used my desktop Dell to transfer the file using MapSource. Since I had Garmin BlueChart products installed on the desktop PC, I avoided the error. However, I still did NOT expect that much trouble. Is MapSource intended to be bought and loaded on one PC? I was assuming MapSource was a free Garmin "tool"? .....

I hope I have more luck with the POI Loader! But what format do I download the poi data in? The Smoky Mountain data is available in a gpx format, and several csv formats...... which do I want. It is confusing?

POI Loader is the tool you need for installing the POI Factory files. Now that you've downloaded it, you should have no trouble installing the GPX version of Smoky Mountains POI.

The Getting Started link at the top of any page contain links on how to use Garmin's free POI Loader to install POI files on your Nuvi.

The POI Loader FAQ answers many questions, including yours about using .csv or .gpx files as input. There's also a link there to CharlieG's guide to Custom POI’s with MapSource and POI Loader.

MapSource can be used to manage your Favorites and process POI GPX files. It won't transfer custom POIs to your Nuvi, only Favorites. It's more complicated to use than POI Loader. See CharlieG's guide (or other FAQs) for details.

If you want to try MapSource, call Garmin support and they will send you a MapSource DVD with the City Navigator maps that are loaded on your Nuvi. The 2009 version can only be used on one computer, so you'd have to choose between your desktop or notebook. If you install it on your desktop, you will be able to access both the maps for your 680 and the BlueChart marine data.

By the way, I think the Garmin operator's manual for my unit is a joke. I have had to read tons of faqs to work through many issues that had me stopped cold......

There are many people here in the forums to help. smile

My wife and I have enjoyed learning many new tips and tricks for our 680 "Daniel", thanks to the POI Factory community.
