Streetpilot C340 not charging in the car

Hi,

my streetpilot C340, which is 6 months' old has stopped charging from the car charger. Though I can charge it from the computer with USB cable.

Can somebody advise what could have gone wrong and how can I rectify it?

thanks

check the fuse

Check the fuse in the cigarette plug. If the fuse broke, replace with the correct amp fuse. If you have continuity tester use it.

I tried charging my GPS in

I tried charging my GPS in two different cars, But it did not charge in any. So I believe the issue is with the GPS unit. I am not sure though.

Check the terminal

Check the terminal underneath the GPS. The best option is to contact Garmin since your unit is still within warranty period.

live in Toronto, Canada

Actually I bought the GPS from Walmart in Washington on a visit. I live in Toronto, Canada.

If the fuse is blown in the power cord...

trying in different cars won't help. You may have thought that when the suggestion was to check the fuse they meant for the car... The end of the units power cord unscrews and there is a fuse in there.. If you haven't already done so, check it...

I did not know about any

I did not know about any fuse in the power cord too. Thanks. I would check it up and post my result here. In the meantime any advice on checking the fuse of the power cord would help me.

If you registered your unit

If you registered your unit with Garmin they will be the ones to repair it.You will need to call them on getting information on shipping it to them.I would first do what another member suggested and check the fuse.See your manual for instructions.Do you have another Garmin cable for the lighter you can try?

If you look on the end of your cable on the part that plugs into the lighter you will see a turn screw. If you remove that you will find the fuse.

fuse is gone

I just opened the cable with your instructions and page 36. And the fuse metal wire is really broken. I can see through the glass tube. Now i need to buy. Do you think any automotive shop like Canadin tire would carry it.

What amp of your fuse. You need 2Amp fuse

I don't know about Canadin tire but if they're a parts store, yes. You could even check a full service gas station, around here you can even find them in super markets.... Walmart, Target...

Great website

Great job. I appreciate all the help.

I will check at Walmart too.

Blown Fuse

Not sure if there is a Radio Shack in Canada, but they carry just about any type of fuse

Got it

I got the fuse from Walmart today. I put it in the power cord and it has started working great.

Thanks for all your help.

Bet you are one happy

Same problem with my power cord....

Unfortunately my issue is not the fuse as that has been checked. I think I have a short in the cord. At first I thought the fuse in my truck where the cord plugs in was blown but after plugging other devices into the charging components and they worked but the GPS power cord would not, I knew I had issues. I am going to have to purchase a new power cord which I have from Amazon.com as my gps has age on it so no replacements from Garmin coming this way.

Next issue I see arising is that the internal battery will no longer say "CHARGE COMPLETE". I have been charging my GPS on the computer for the last 48 hrs since having issues with the power cord and have yet to see the unit tell me the charge is complete. I think it may be soon time to hang it up.

The original power cable on mine would not power the GPSr any more. The first thing I checked was the fuse in the cable. It "looked" ok to the naked eye. What I did was just use a cigarette to USB adapter ( the kind for Ipods etc) and then ran a USB cable to the GPSr from the adapter and that worked. Not as convinient but it did the trick.

Some times a 3AG type fuse can look good but still be open. Use a multimeter or continuity tester to check the fuse. You might also check the spring that holds the contact firm against the fuse and the one for the tip of the plug to ensure that they are okay and not misaligned.

Good luck
