I have a Nuvi 660 with North America 2009 maps loaded. I live in NC. We are traveling to Scotland in a few weeks and will be about in rental car for 2 weeks. I purchased the UK maps on SD card. Now when I arrive in Scotland and insert the card and turn on the Nuvi, will it know to use the UK maps. Besides maybe taking awhile to figure out where it is and locking onto satellites, will things work just like in the US? Maybe an obvious question, but I'm a little dense sometimes.
Is there anything else I should know about using the Nuvi overseas? I'm assuming the cigarette lighter adaptor will work in the rental car. Any great POI's I should download? Thanks.
It works anywhere
Last year we traveled to Germany and I had purchased the City Navigator DVD with Europe maps and then installed the maps onto an SD card with Mapsource. When we got into the rental car at Dusseldorf, Germany and turned on the Nuvi, it only took the Nuvi 2 minutes to lock onto the satellites and route us to our destination. Make sure that the Europe maps are enabled (selected) under Settings -> Map -> Map Info.
The cigarette lighter adapter worked fine in our rental car. Just to be on the safe side, I took my Garmin AC adapter too (I have a nuvi 350 and it came with it), so you might want to take one and use a converter plug to connect to the European sockets (I have read some cars do not have the universal cigarette socket like the ones here in US).
Regarding POIs I highly recommend the Speedcamera POI for Scotland. POI factory has the distilleries of Scotland (http://www.poi-factory.com/node/2018).
Have an awesome trip and post back on the wonderful sights of Scotland and how your Nuvi did there when you get back.
