Tampa Bay, FL - Project Discussion

Thanks to Miss POI for getting this project set up and also to flaco for the POI files he had already created and uploaded to the site.

If anyone would like to help on this project or has specific requests or ideas for interesting POI files, please post your information in this topic.

Thanks Gary for getting the ball rolling, like I mentioned on my e-mail I'll be willing to contribute to the project, time permitting.

There is another file I uploaded previously that has to do with the area and can be added to the project, look for GTE Federal Credit Union.

My restaurants files are very popular looking at the number of times they have been downloaded, but not as popular as the Strip Club file, wonder why?

You might want to send a message to Miss POI about the GTE Credit Union file in case she doesn't see your post.

If the strip club file is popular, I wonder if I should create one for nudist resorts? There are several up here where I live.

Superbowl XLIII is coming to Tampa on Feb. 1, 2009. This will be the 4th Superbowl hosted in Tampa and the 2nd in Raymond James Stadium.

Estimates are that 150,000 visitors will converge on the Tampa Bay Area and that the economic impact to the region will be approximately $500M.

This would be a good time to start thinking about making new and updating existing POI files that visitors might use while here.

Any ideas, suggestions?

I am just about done with a "Beaches" file and should be ready to upload it in a couple days.

I have also been thinking about a "Golf Courses" file. With all the courses in the area, it will be a sizeable project.

I finished and uploaded the Tampa Bay Area Beaches file. I also uploaded a nudist resort file for those interested in family-friendly, clothing-optional accommodations. Both are now available on the metro project page.

I have started on a public golf courses file. I'll be away on a road trip to Indiana for a couple weeks, so I'll have to pick it up when I get back.

I finally had some time to finish the golf course POI file. I just uploaded it.

A couple of members mentioned POI files for AA meeting locations, so I decided to take a stab at it for the Tampa Bay area.

I finished the first file covering Pinellas County. It really is a complete meeting list, by meeting location (address).

I have 2 more to complete the Tampa Bay area:

1. West Pasco County
2. Hillsborough & East Pasco Counties

We'll see how much interest there is now.

When Miss POI gets a chance, she is going to create a POI Package page and list the other two:

1. Hillsborough & East Pasco Counties
2. A combined file (Hillsborough, Pinellas & Pasco counties).

The files have Central Office / Intergroup contact phone numbers and website addresses. Each POI meeting location also has the daily meeting list with times.

I hope these files prove useful to newcomers and visitors.

Just wanted to give thanks to those working on this project. Great information to have as I've just moved (back) to the area.

Let us know if you find anything that needs to be "tweaked."

How about a high ground POI file? You know the next time a hurricane/tidalwave hits. You could name it by the height above sea level.

Is anyone maintaining the GET FCU Locations? I see that the last update was over 2 years ago. I downloaded the current list of branch locations and geocoded it. Who should I send the list to?

flaco was maintaining it, but I haven't seen him on the site for a looong time.

Sorry if we don't bump into each other here as often as we once did, retirement is keeping me busy.

Just so you all know I took a trip in summer 2008 from Tampa to Fairbanks AK, 12,600 miles round trip, my Garmin 260 worked as good as can be expected, only one time it got really lost near Alberta Canada.

When I get a chance I'll post some of the stories from the trip as well as all the POI where we camped with the fifth wheel so you can all see the route in MapSource.

At the conclusion of it's current FREE exhibit, Thanks for the Memories, the Florida International Museum at St. Petersburg College will close it's doors forever on Dec. 4, 2010.

Just added, if you know of any others let me know.

I just had a member report that they downloaded and tried to load the Tampa Bay Area Attractions POI file and received a "Format Error Line 15."

I've successfully loaded this file on my nuvi 660 and visually inspecting the file, I can see no problem with the entry on line 15, or any other line.

Could I ask one of you to download the file and try loading it with POI Loader and report back if it loads correctly or not. The entry on line 15 is for the Pioneer Museum.

Just loaded onto my Garmin 250 internal POI folder and to my external card no problems. 47 poi listed as loaded

I am the one who wrote to you,I have never had this problem come up on this file before, but I had to wipe the memory from my computer and had to load a new poi loader today from the garmin site version 2.6.0 for microsoft and that is when the problem started,it showed yours and three other files with problems,This POI loader was loaded to the Garmin site 01/14/2011 I just turned on my gps and went to your file I show 16 attractions in this file is that the correct number,thanks.Sorry for any trouble but thought you would like to know I deleted this file from my GPS and reloaded it and the error still shows up.

The file has 47 POIs in it, not 16. I am still using POI Loader version 2.5.4.0.

It's no trouble, so no reason to apologize. There must be something else going on with your results that I don't understand.

To avoid filling up this project topic, it might be best for you to start a new topic and explain your problem. I'm sure you'll get plenty of help. I'm sure someone else is using the newer version of POI Loader and can offer some input.

If you can go back to your older version do that and reload the POI's with the older version. The new one might have a bug in it

Hey flaco, my wife & I recently joined GTE FCU & I downloaded your location file. I was just wondering about 2 things - is there a reason you don't have the location at 702 N Franklin Street, Tampa in the file and 2nd, looking at the services availible at each location you put in column 4, several locations offer Safe Deposit Boxes which is something we were looking for.

Now, if I could only figure out how to update the CO-OP ATM file on here. The CO-OP website doesn't allow pulling all 28,000 ATMs at once.

How did I miss that one? thanks for pointing it out.

Hey Flaco, just a quick note - you may want to update the GTE Federal Credit Union references to GTE Financial since they just changed their name.

That's where I have my accounts. They are a great CU I love all the capabilities on their website like remote deposit and being able to transfer money with external bank accounts, all with no fees!

Gary, thanks for remind me, I'll do it sometime this week.
