What would you be updating three or four times a year? If you are talking about JPEG, Custom POI'S and MP3 files, they do take up space on the unit. I have found using an SD card to store this info for me is much better.

I believe you're referring to the operating software. These updates replace the existing software and don't take up much more space.
If you're concerned, I'd recommend deleting the language files that you probably don't need (Norwegian, etc).
