Ok all, I feel like Forrest Gump asking this but here goes. I have been reading about uploading to the GPS, (haven't done it yet) and it is my understanding that previous POI's are over written, does that include the standard POI's that are in mapsource, if so how do I keep the mapsource originals?
Frequently Asked Questions
The Originals stay where they are
Until you upgrade the map itself. It's your custom POIs that get re-written each time you upload to your device.

loading poi
I had the same problem with my poi overwriting but now when I upload a poi file on my GPS I rename it to poi1 poi2 etc. the poi loader calls It poi. I forgot the extension. This works for my c550 and my iQue m4.

One Directory
I kept uploading the POI's to my 2720 and they kept overwriting each one. So I thought I read somewhere if you put all the POI's in one directory then upload them they will all be put into individual folders and they where.
So does that mean every time u want to upload a poi you have to upload them all at the same time?
Good luck!

Yes, you should create one
Yes, you should create one directory (folder) on your computer with all you POI in it. You can create subfolders in that directory and those will end up as categories when you upload them to your GPSr.
You need to keep all the POI you've uploaded in that folder and reload the whole batch each time.
.
My problem with that was I
My problem with that was I had my weigh stations set as a proximity alert and the speed zones as a speed alert and I couldn't figure out how to upload them seperatly without renaming the poi file. I have 1 folder for weigh stations and school zones and the other for cameras.

Cool
I will have to try that the next time. Once I download or find more POI's that I want to install.so for example I can do:
Lighthouses
_Michigan LH's
_ New Hampshire LH's
and such
I want to get some red light ones, speed trap ones and anything pertaining to driving that prevents me from getting tickets

Keeping poi's separate

I have also done a similar thing in that I rename the poi.gpi file after uploading to whatever the original file is called ie. lakeswest.gpi summits.gpi waterfalls.gpi etc.
This way all my custom poi's don't have to be reloaded every time I want to add a new poi, as well as keeping all my speed & proximity alerts associated with their original poi, and if you want to get rid of a certain poi you just delete that particular .gpi file without losing the rest.
This seems to be working well for me:)

Just wondering and I am sure others would like to know too.. Like I knotused that I have a vecheles directory and such..
Also, would like to know where are the maps, etc..

Don't understand the concern in replacing POI files.

I don't understand the advantage. I keep all of my POI's in folders on my PC. It only takes a few minutes to load the 30 custom POI folders which include over 50,000 locations. Doesn't seem like it saves much time. If you were loading two diffent POI folders, it might actually take more time.

Changing the display order

I'm a fan of this scheme because it lets me alter the order that POI's appear in the list. Of course if you keep all Poi's in a tree, you can do this by altering the folder names, but it's not very elegant.
It's a bit of a fiddle to get the individual .GPI's accepted in your desired order (but you can use the SD card trick we discussed before - keep popping the card out and skipping to the next one you want to appear).
Once the .GPI files have been accepted, they stay in the order you set, even when you overwrite the file with a new version.
I agree it doesn't save any time - there are more steps involved in producing a new version of a .GPI and then having to rename it. Having an old flash drive or usb memory stick that you can leave in the PC helps a bit here, because you can use it as an intermediary.
