Nuvi 7XX will not use ferry routes

Hello all.

When planning a route that should be shorter and faster via ferry on my Nuvi 770 it does not take the ferry route. I did check the avoidance setting and ferry's are not checked. The ferry I tried is the Bridgeport/Port Jefferson ferry in NY. Anyone know if this is a bug or a cockpit error?

Thanks,
Jim

Not Sure

Using a Nuvi 350, I can route to Mackinac Island in Michigan and it uses the ferry. Of course, in that case, there is no other way to get there except via ferry. I have it set for Faster Time. All I have checked for avoidances is U-Turns and Unpaved Roads. Do you think Lake Michigan counts as an unpaved road? wink

Washington State Ferries

Both my Nüvi 350 and 750 route via Washington State Ferries. No problem.

Thanks for the quick responses.

I have try to force the Nuvi in several ways to take the Long Island ferry but to no success.

Thanks again,
Jim

Must be a bug in the map data

I have a nüvi 200 with the 2008 mapset. I set my location as Port Jeff and my destination as Bridgeport. My GPSr insists on driving around the Sound. I even set the Port Jeff-Bridgeport Ferry as a via-point and it still woundn't take the ferry. My guess is that even though the ferry route is on the map, it is not considered routeable. I even tried Pedestrian and Bicycle modes.

Maybe the map doesn't know the ferry is there? Does mapquest use the ferry if you route it there?

Hmm, I did a test route on mapquest and it did plan a route using the ferry. I tried the same route on Yahoo maps and even though the map showed the ferry route as a dotted line, it avoided the ferry and went around the Sound, I even tried to drag thr route that way but it insisted on going around. Yahoo maps use NAVTEQ maps just like Garmin so this ferry may not be mapable in NAVTEQ.

I assume it is a bug in the routing software. If I get a chance i will call Garmin.
