2009 maps DVD vs Mapsource

I've been reading all over how people are having memory issues with loading their maps and have a quick question. When you update your maps via the DVD, does it remove your old maps and install the updated ones? And if you load the 2009 maps using Mapsource does it remove the old maps too or does it just add the new map info?

Backing up the GPS and then

Backing up the GPS and then remov ing the old works safely. Then install the new. That way you have a fall back if what your trying to do fails.

Do not remove the old image files. Mapinstall requires them to do the update.

My understanding...

The update routine checks for the old image file and if found, copies a new version of it onto the unit. The file in question is GMAPPROM.IMG (and sometimes GMAPPROM1.IMG for dual US/Europe maps).

Hence...

If they're not present, the update won't proceed. This may just be for licencing reasons...

If you use Mapsource, to update the unit, you choose which segments you would like and these are assembled into a map image (GMAPSUPP.IMG) which is then transferred to the unit. If you did nothing else, you would now have old and new maps present. You could, at this stage, manually delete GMAPPROM.IMG and rename GMAPSUPP.IMG arrow GMAPPROM.IMG
