Sharing Maps - Is this Piracy

My friend bought the Europe Map for his Nuvi 360. He vacationed there. He bought it in 2006, used it for 3 weeks and has never used it again, nor does he plan to use it again for the foreseable future.

I am going to go to Europe and thought it would be great if I could load it on my 360 for the 2 weeks I will be there.

Is this even possible? Would this be wrong to do? I cant imagine it being wrong as only one person is using it at a time and only for a total of 5 weeks in 2 years.

does the installation password have to correspond with a specific unit?

.

Did he purchase it on disk or on preloaded SD card?

The preloaded SD cards can be used with any compatible GPS receiver. The maps are locked to the card.

The City Navigator maps on disk come with an unlock code which can only be used with a single GPS unit. Once the code in used, it cannot be retrieved nor can it be used on a different GPS unit.

It's possible, however, that the maps have a second unlock code available. (Versions previous to v2008 typically had a second unlock available.)

The codes (if available) can be used on another GPS unit that the purchaser owns. Legally, in order for you to install it on your unit, he would need to give you the entire software package.

Swap?

Why not swap your 360's for the trip?

RE: Sharing Maps - Is This Piracy

Most of the charts and maps I have purchased for my various Garmins had two unlock codes and could be used on two different units. Garmin even once gave me a third code when I sold one GPS and wanted to install Bluecharts on a new one. In general, the license stated that you had to own both GPSes to use the codes.

NUVIs are different. The maps are generally not loaded as parts, but one whole region, like all of the US for example. I don't think NUVI cds came with more than one code, but you could certainly purchase one from Garmin's site. The data would be old, Europe is on NT V9.

I took the OP to be saying that his friend owned a North America nuvi and purchased the Europe maps separately to use with that unit.

MM, You are correct. With

MM,

You are correct.

With that being said, anyone want to let me "borrow" your 2009 North America map and the 2nd unlock code? (ha ha)

They only come with 1 unlock code

So, to update my 660 & 750, I have two on order... $60 each - and worth every last red cent as far as I'm concerned.
