travel directions

Say you are in Seattle and you want to go to Las Vegas.

You select Las Vegas on your unit and it plots a course from Seattle to Vegas via various roads and highways.

If you did the same thing (select from Seattle to Las Vegas) in Mapsource, would Mapsource pick the exact same route (same highways etc) as my nuvi?

In other words, can I preview the trip in mapsource that my gps will lay out for me?

Since I don't have

Since I don't have mapsource, I am not an authority on this and could very well be wrong, but I believe that I have heard that mapsource may choose a route different from the GPSr. Therefore, what you want to accomplish may work some of the time, but not all the time. I could very well be wrong though.

By selecting the same

By selecting the same "conditions" for travel - Fastest, avoidances, Speeds in the preferences in Mapsource you should, on a long trip, get a very similar routing to that of the GPSr.
At least, that has been my experience.

There will be some small differences - ex: sometimes Mapsource wants to take me around Jacksonville, FL on I-295 and other times it takes me straight thru the city on I-95. ??????????

My experience

I've played with this on Mapsource and my 2720. Ken is right. Quite a bit of the time, the routes are fairly close. Sometimes not. Never could figure out exactly why.

If I've got time and am planning ahead, I connect the 2720 to AC power, sit by the PC with Mapsource running too and run the routes. Pretty easy to force Mapsource to route where you want. Then download the route to the 2720.

This probably becomes more difficult with a model that doesn't allow you to download routes, only waypoints.

Trip Selection

I have found that Garmin doesn't always pick the best route. I have checked a route with Microsoft Streets and Trips and Mapquest which agreed with the route I wanted and was familiar with but the GPS insisted I go a longer route even though I asked for the shortest distance.

thanks

thanks for the info

I guess I'll just rely on saving different waypoints in my nuvi 650 favorites to ensure that the unit takes me on a route that I wish to follow.

A Different Desire

That is an entirely different desire. Garmin has it's outdated database and algorithms that don't always yield what the user wants.

FWIW Garmin assured me that MapSource and my 750 were the same in terms of routing and that appears to be true. However if either one were updated then I would expect variations.
