Well, I thought I’d give topografix.com EasyGPS a try. BIG MISTAKE! I have a nuvi 660.
I installed the software, retrieved my “waypoints” (Favorites) from the 660 & took a look around. I then decided to edit some of the waypoints & loaded them back into the 660. All looked good until I looked in one of the Favorites & noticed that information was missing. I thought, maybe I never put anything in the one I was looking at, so I went to others where I know there should be info like phone #. ALL GONE! The Favorites were still there but no additional information was present. No address or phone numbers .
To test I did the following:
- Turn on the 660. Search & save an address as “Test”.
- I then edited “Test” & entered a phone number & saved.
- Connect the 660 to my USB.
- Open EasyGPS, retrieve waypoints (Favorites).
- Right click on the saved address Test & click on Edit.
- Change the symbol.
- Right click & click on “Send Waypoint to GPS”.
- I then did the usual “Safely Remove Hardware” & unplugged the USB.
- Turn on the 660. ALL DETAIL INFORMATION IS GONE for the Test Favorite.
Needless to say, I uninstalled the software.
I don't use Favorites
I don't use Favorites for anything that I want to save and document info for. I only use Favorites for temporary one time navigation to an address, then I delete it afterward. I have the same problem with MapSource as you do with Easy GPS. It doesn't extract any data except long/lat and name. Anything that I download from the unit looses any additional info.
Anything I really want to save for repeat use goes into my Custom POI's. That way I can manage the telephone, address, and whatever else I enter in the Comments field in the Waypoint manager in MapSource. I've never used Easy GPS, so I don't know how it manages that data. For me, MapSource is my main resource for managing data outside of the GPS unit. It works like a charm for me with my nuvi 260.
However, I don't know how it manages things like phone number info for a Bluetooth unit... never needed that stuff.

Change symbol might have a bug
This sounds vaguely similar to something that happened when saving POI files in GPX format. Some of my entries lost data after saving. Some did not. Phil Hornby explained that changing the symbol revealed a Garmin bug with GPX. Or something like that. Anyway, when I changed the symbols back to the default and resaved the file, the information showed up again.
You might want to try your experiment again but this time leave the symbols alone to see if this is the case.

It just doesn't support the Garmin extensions to the GPX specification, that's all.

Mapsource preserves the data in the Garmin extensions - but it doesn't allow you to edit it.

This was to do with the way POILoader interacts with .gpx files. We could write a book about that
