Apparently someone was combing through the firmware code and found "RoleGPS" which some are saying may indicate future GPS support.
Let's hope this is true. - but for know it's just rumor.
Linux and possibly Android on Tilt....
* If you make an educated selection of which hardware to use, you are not tied to the carrier. I have a custom ROM on my Tilt, and I could even run Linux (and possibly Android) on it. Some BlackBerries, such as the 8830, disable the GPS hardware for as long as you are outside Sprint's network.

I am also using a custom ROM on my AT&T Tilt, and my carrier is T-Mobile. But the thought of running Linux or Android on tilt simply tickled me. Unfortunately, googling for this did not help much. Could someone please guide me (to pertinent forums and/or sites), though I understand that it is totally off the topic?

Re: Android.
Moon,
You may want to check XDA Developer's Android for Kaiser thread:

Note - This will only work on the HTC TyTN II / Kaiser / Tilt.

That would be nice to see.
Me Too If No ATT
Same with me -- ATT service is terrible in my area.

Now that would be fun to see. I would enjoy watching some of their flicks while waiting for a plane, train, etc. I'll have to check it out!
Stability is an issue

Thanks for the great information, Krieger. After playing with more cooked ROMs and a little more research, it appears that the Android is not very stable on tilt at this time:

Guess I need to wait until either most (if not all) issues are worked out, and/or the warranty (on my phone) runs out

Couldn't wait for Application
We love our iPhones, but we just couldn't wait for a GPS app to appear in time.
We have the original (2G) models and were going to upgrade to 3G if the GPS was at least close to what Garmin currently offers.
However, with several trips coming up, we decided to plunk the money into a Garmin 255. I'm kind of glad we did, considering the 3G issues people are experiencing and the fact that the 255 is a really nice unit.
ipod touch gps?
There is a small chance the ipod touch could get a gps. But probably just cosmetic, storage size, or price changes.

P.S. For all who don't know apple is releasing a bunch of new updates in sept. Macbooks and ipods for almost certain. Check out macrumors.com for details.

Touch upgrades coming soon

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Touch get a camera and GPS as this would help with integration of many third party apps.

Got my ATT Blackberry thinking it had GPS
Its all about location, location, location.
My family from back east when they come to ks can't use their verizon phones. Sprint is ok to fair in some places - except that you get double billed for services and hung up on calling tech support. AT&T works well in much of the state.
I have given up trying to find the "do all" carrier but gps will be an interesting selling point in the very near future. More folks would probably use it than the camera in the phone...

Indeed, more people buying a phone for GPS? YES.
However, they make a lot of CLAIMS to have it and then they do not deliver. That is the topic of much interest on the Blackberry forums. The carrier can disengage the GPS feature built into the phone, and then charge you an extra $10/mo to have that feature enabled. With ATT, they took out the Blackberry Maps totally, and you get the Telenavigator for a fee/mo. I put in the Google Maps. I'm keeping that phone instead of trying to buy another which will also CLAIM GPS and not deliver. They all say "GPS capable" and that is true, just not deliverable to everyone by every carrier. I think they are manipulating folks into getting the phone, but requiring multi-year contracts for their services.
I paid more for my phone with ATT because I would not sign a contract with them. But with all the new services coming, like LOCATION BASED SERVICES which says the phone already knows where you are, I will wait to see if Comcast doesn't offer that feature on my phone sooner or later! All such services are melting together it seems.
But then, in 1960 I was not going to purchase a TV until it was flat enough to hang on the wall like a picture frame. It took 30 years for that to happen. Wonder how long it will be for all the carriers and services to offer realtime location based service to the public. I don't have 30 more years to spare.
Time for them to get cracking, sez me.

I don't have one but I do know quite a bit about them. Never hurts to ask ... Unless its a "how do you like it" question, which I apparently can't answer.
