Chatty Charley thread for the week of March 10th 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

CFL's

Late last week I was mentioning to a group of friends at lunch that I had upgraded my outdoor spot lights to the newer fluorescent spots to both conserve energy and (most of all) so that I did not have to replace the bulbs every 6 months. The newer bulbs supposedly have 5 year lifespan. Yesterday, I noted that one of these bulbs had already gone out after only 3 months. I removed the bulb from the 2 bulb fixture and after about 60 seconds the second bulb also went out. It lasted only about 1 month. Now I'm thinking my plan wasn't so great after all... Wondering if anyone else might have had the same bad luck...

I have had two outdoor floods for about 7 months now and all seems to be going good (in a double fixture). I also have a 100 watt daylight CFL in a reading light for about the same time and it is still going. Maybe you got into a bad run of lights

Diesel

dminz wrote:

Here in the oil state of Texas (remember the Houston Oilers?) diesel is $3.80. Diesel is a byproduct of gasoline and needs less refining, so the higher price is a mystery. My Super Duty drinks $125 worth per fill-up. But we all are diesel buyers since it is used in producing and transporting food and other goods. Watch for inflation in almost everything. Well, maybe not GPS's (I hope) since they are easy to transport and are still evolving technology.

You know, I am not too sure about that as it is a function of heat in the distilling process. I think I have already said more than I know about the subject. See the below site for a quick explanation.

Thanks for the link. If you look at the distillation column, you'll see that gasoline is two steps above diesel. A higher position in the column indicates more refining. A couple of sentences give clues:

"Gas oil or Diesel distillate - used for diesel fuel and heating oil; starting material for making other products."

After distillation, further treatment with chemicals is required. More of this chemical treatment is required to make gasoline than diesel. On the page about the refining process: "Chemical processing, for example, can break longer chains into shorter ones. This allows a refinery to turn diesel fuel into gasoline depending on the demand for gasoline."

There are several "Fix It and Forget It" books to choose from. I'm sure any of them would be good. I'll look them over and see which one sounds best.

Now I can spend more time here and not have to worry about dinner. wink

Earlier today I ordered: Hot Sour Salty Sweet: A Culinary Journey Through Southeast Asia an Naples at Table : Cooking in Campania.

Thanks!

Sandman, Just realized yesterday that the bulbs that died WERE NOT the fluorescent type and that my above statement is incorrect. The fluroescent are in the OTHER outdoor flood light fixture and are doing well, at least so far..

Also, the fact that no one else posted with an unfavorable response makes me think that these guys are going to last a good while longer.

I have been using compact fluorescents for years now and have rarely, if ever had to replace them. I seem to remember the earlier generation of bulbs (the ones that were huge) having a shorter lifespan that the more recent ones. Unlike incandesent bulbs, I don't feel the need to keep extra CFLs on hand.

On a side note, I just read somewhere on the internet this week that compact fluorescents may not be a good match for motion-sensing situations (such as a flood over your garage) as the constant on/off may wear them down faster. The article suggested that a conventional bulb may be better suited for the wear and tear of that situation.

Just a Note...........

it is a good idea not to leave home with them lighted, or lit, which ever. Since having one blow up while away from home, and even though I use them, I am very cautious about leaving any on while away. This is the screw in fluorescents bulbs. Asianfire has seen a photo of what can happen, ask him! It sure ruined a high dollar lampshade.

Ouch! and OUCH! compared.

$3.50 a gallon today. Ouch!

I know there are people worse off than us here in Australia (for petrol prices) but spare us a thought for about A$1.40/L which is somewhere north of US$6/Gallon and getting higher in our state capital. That price is Standard. Premium and diesel are higher! Go bush just a little (into the country) or in other state capitals and add 10 to 15 cents/L. Get way out into the country - 50% higher... OUCH! OUCH! OUCH!

Yes, finally getting warmer, last two days 6 deg. C, and after sweating for the last 3 months shoveling the driveway free of snow, I spent the last two days shoveling the crap back on the driveway to melt!! (I have no place left for snow if we get any more).

Daughter and I went to a St.

Daughter and I went to a St. Patricks Day festival today, what a beautiful day.

Watched a heavy metal band (not my kind of music) because daughter thought it was like a "Live" guitar hero, she like it. But our ears aren't right even now.

The food ticked me off. $16 for two gyros, that weren't even that good or filling! We spent $57 today on food!
