New to POI Factory

Good afternoon to all. I am new to POI Factory and I must say for the last few days i have come to the realization that this is he best site on the internet. Everyone seems so friendly and willing to help out, (something i don't see a lot of in New York). I look forward to gathering advice and eventually giving it as well.
I recently spent the last few weeks pulling my hair out trying to figure out which GPS system would be best for me; i decided to go with the Nuvi 750. How can such an expensive piece of equipment come with only a 3 page instruction manual, no ac wall adapter and no carrying case? Never the less i was still willing to purchase it.
I couldn't wait to get my Nuvi, when it finally arrived i opened the box, turned it on and unfortunately I couldn't get service in my apartment building. When i go to *take me home* it takes me to Mongolia on the map. I’m a little confused, im sure I’ll get the hang of it.
Anyway, just wanted to say Hello, and if anyone has any cool tips about the Nuvi 750 i would love to hear it being that I'm very inexperienced when it comes to this.

If you search at the Garmin Website you should find that you can download the complete manual. The manuals are not all-inclusive but with it and this website you should get along just fine.
The search function and FAQs on this site are excellent.

MrKenFL- "Money can't buy you happiness .. But it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery." NUVI 260, Nuvi 1490LMT & Nuvi 2595LMT all with 2014.4 maps !

welcome!

two quick things ...

1) therre should be an instruction manual on your GPS ... plug into your computer and open as a Drive ... should find a file there

2) did you set your "Home"? Not sure what you mean by "takes me to Mongolia on the map" ... if you set your Home location, you should be good to go.

Very, very true MrKenFL

Very, very true MrKenFL "Money can't buy you happiness .. But it does bring you a more pleasant form of misery". That is by far the best line I have heard all year. Thanks for the laugh.
Thanks for the advice DJs. I actually did set my Home but there is also Garmin USA as well as some area of Mongolia also set as my default home addresses, i just cant seem to get it off of Mongolia. I have a good feeling it's because of weak satellite signal. The second I leave work I’ll head straight home and look further into it. Being that the Nuvi didn’t come with a case and the weather is pretty crummy outside I decided to leave it home.
One quick question. I plan on paying the yearly subscription to support this fantastic site. Once I do so I plan on downloading the POI of red light cameras. Do I download that to my computer then input the locations manually, or do they load up directly onto the Nuvi? Sorry for all the questions, im just a little ecstatic over the purchase.

Download first

Download POI files from here to your computer - then use POI Loader program (free from Garmin) to upload to your GPSr from your computer. Lots of info on this site on how to do this !

Welcome to the site, it is nice to have you with us;) I look forward to hearing about your adventures with your new toy. You will be a pro with that machine in now time, we are here to help.

Miss POI

Be home first!

".. also Garmin USA as well as some area of Mongolia also set as my default home addresses, i just cant seem to get it off of Mongolia"

To avoid problems from the very beginning I would scape from Mongolia first:
Reset NUVI 750 and delete all custom POI and favorites:

1.- Power off the GPS
2.- Press and hold the right bottom corner
3.- Power on
4.- System asks if you are sure to delete all custom data and setting.
5.- If you answer "yes" next screen looks like brand new device.

"I plan on downloading the POI.."
You are not alone about that.. Check perfect FAQ topic.

Thanks Everyone.

Wow, i want to thank everyone for all the great tips. By erasing all the custom POIs that wont by any chance affect the pre loaded POI's will it. (its a pretty dumb question being that it say CUSTOM POIS), but i just want to make sure. Thanks for all the great tips everyone.

Welcome again

First of all, again, welcome to the site. You will find this site to be much more helpful then a silly manual!

Second, no erasing custom pois will not delete the internal ones.

Thanks for the Tidbit - djs

Although I've read the downloaded version of the manual from Gamin cover to cover several times, I never noticed it was included in the GPSr software also. Thanks

Don't forget to run webupdater to make sure you are running the latest firmware. After the "first" part of the update, continue as there could be updates there as well (Receiver and Voices etc). The 7xx are great devices and you have come to the a great site.

Have fun with the new "toy"

Thanks for the tips Perrdom,

Thanks for the tips Perrdom, ill be sure to try it as soon as i get home from work. Wow, so much to do. They say there ready to go right out of the box but it seems as if theres alot of tweeks that need to be done. Thing i love about this is that you can almost make these GPS systems a part of you. You can really build these things up.

Welcome aboard!

You will find just about, no, all the info you need to enjoy your 750. I have been a member for over 3 months now and constantly come back to see whats up!

I'm a native New Yorker now living in NC. You are quite correct that folks on this site are friendly. I have gleaned a wealth of info on the site and have posted two POI's to date. The NC state parks and K&W Cafeterias. I think if you get hooked like I did you too will be looking to create and post your own POI's. In my opinion, that is one of the features driving this site to the membership it has. Miss POI and her partner JM have done a superlative job of creating a site we all can enjoy, contribute to and benefit from. You can't do much better than that!

Any suggestions

Having alittle bit of trouble here, can anyone lend some advice. My nuvi 750 automatically now take me to Taiwan, it's odd. It cant seem to find a satellite. Anyone have any clue on why this is happening? I plan on calling Garmin first thing in the morning but i figure i'd give it one more shot. At first it landed me in Mongolia, now taiwan, im confused.

.

Have you tried performing a hard reset?

Open the antenna

Have you tried opening the antenna? That activates the GPS to search for satellites.

Welcome

to our little community!

Not doing anything worth a darn.

Nuvi 750 has an internal

Nuvi 750 has an internal antenna. I figured it out everyone, i just dont get reception in the new york area. I just traveled upstate and it worked great. New york city is flooded with huge buildings, guess thats the problem.

That was one

of the major factors in helping me decide to downgrade to a Nuvi 680, which is actually a huge upgrade because the dang thing works EVERYWHERE! Tall buildings or not... I spend a lot of time in and out of downtown Dallas and surrounding areas and have never lost a signal.

Kerry in Dallas

Welcome Aboard!

Unfortunately that is a correct statement. But then I'm sure you're not driving many places in the city and when you do drive you already know how to get there. I've not yet met a New Yorker who didn't know the city like the back of their hand.

That's great however, downtown Dallas has nothing on the canyons of Manhattan. I remember the first time I visited NYC, it made me feel so small.

A tall building

is a tall building, no matter if in NY or Chicago or Timbuktu.. the 680 keeps it signal in tunnels as well as elevators... it's a relevant statement..

Kerry

poor reception

may need to buy an external antenna -I have a c340 and it had trouble in certain areas i use an antenna
and it works fine and faster -many online sales I got mine on ebay

good luck

This Brooklynite can become lost in the Bronx

I can still become lost in the Bronx although I have been living in NYC since 1965 and driving around it since 1969.
