MapSource for your computer from the update disc

This is for PCs only, sorry MAC.

PLEASE NOTE this is copied and pasted directly from a Garmin tech email, the only change I made was to #5 regarding the UNLOCKING OF MAPS, my unlock code was there and I deleted it. The Unlock code I deleted was the same as on MY.Garmin.com under "MapSource® Unlock", you may want to go get that prior to attempting this.

Your GPSr does NOT need to be plugged in to your computer to do this.

If you feel at all uncomfortable doing any of this please don't, I would hate to cause any of you stress, contact a Garmin Tech Rep. I got this VIA email from the Second shift people, they seem less stressed after the phones stop ringing. GO FIGURE

I believe I read on here that Garmin has a newer update than Map Source 6.12.4.

Good Luck Please let me know if this works for you.

Jim

Latest Version

This worked for me too. Thanks!!

No need to download the latest version of MapSource if you have the 2008 NT DVD. It includes version 6.12.4.

I may be reading this wrong but after reading your take on upgrading Mapsource I checked my copy of Mapsource. It stated that it was version 6.12.4.I then notice that it didn,t start up with the last setting map that I was viewing. It had a global view the United States and Canada with a view window in the middle with various statements saying these maps was given with the permission of Canada and with about 5 or 6 other permissions, when I installed the map update 2008.It must have updated Mapsource also, why else would the opening page change like when I first installed it a year ago when I bought my GPS garmin 7200

On my computer they are

On my computer they are in the c:\Garmin folder. The subfolder for NT8 is labeled: CNNANT8 and the subfolder for NT2008 is labeled: CNNANT2008.
These were created by the Garmin software as I used all the defaults when I installed. I assume you could safely remove CNNANT8 and your version 7 by deleteing them, however, I would rename them and put them in a temporary folder first to be sure nothing is amiss if it were me. I will defer to MM and others with more experience...

tried it

I renamed CNNANT7 to CNNANT7OLD and tried starting MapSource, it complained that the folder did not exists. I renamed it back for now. There must be a registry entry setting this.

Whoops, well back to the drawing board. I tried that also, some things are just never easy. Will explore some more and get back to you, if, and when I find something. There must be a way, just need to find it...

MapSource

This worked for me. I checked the Garmin support site and 6.12.4 is the current version. There is a newer beta version.

I tried, and it works.

I tried, and it works. Thanks

Removal of Old Versions

Sorry to take so long, but decided to go to the source, namely Garmin Tech Support. Here's their response to this issue, don't know why I didn't think of this (old age, I guess):

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International,

I will be happy to help you with the removal of your CNNA NT v 8.

All you have to do is go to your control panel, then click on add and remove programs, and then select the City Navigator North America NT ver 8 maps and uninstall them. The maps might, depending on your system be labeled Mapsource CNNA or Garmin CNNA. Whatever the label, just click remove and this will take care of your issue.

With Best Regards,"

Hopefully this will be the answer to your quest. I did look at this and there are two versions listed on the list of programs installed on my computer, however, I did not try removing them yet, and unknown if it actually removes the directory as sometimes happens with the un-install programs. Good luck, I sure hope this resolves your problem...

Map removeal

That did it!

Thanks.

Your welcome, glad to help...

I have loaded the map source

I have loaded the map source on my PC from the NT update disk. It asks for the unlock code so I have used the one on My Garmin for the USA ( I have 670 so Europe loaded as well) It says "you have successfully unlocked maps" I then continue as per the instructions above and click "finish" But when I go into map source it asks for the unlock code again. I have tried this several times, please help if you can.

The unlock code comes with the update disk

The unlock code comes with the update disk. In my case, it was on a green sticker attached to the back of the plastic disk holder.
