Description: Canyon Rim Visitor Center is one of the park's primary, year round visitor centers. It is located at the New River Gorge Bridge, just north of Fayetteville. A wooden boardwalk provides scenic views of the New River Gorge Bridge and the gorge. There are no hiking trails that start at the visitor center. The center features exhibits, information, park film, and a book store. This is a Passport Stamp Location. Description: This tent only campground located near the historic railroad town of Thurmond offers 7 walk-in sites, 5 on the sandy beach of the New River and 2 in the nearby forest. There are no drive-in sites at this location. RV, camper, or car camping is prohibited. The Stone Cliff Trailhead also starts at the campground. Regulations Overview: − Camp only in designated campsites. − RV, Camper, and Car camping is prohibited at Stone Cliff Campground. − No more than 2 tents per campsite. − No more than 2 vehicles permitted per campsite. − Campers must occupy permitted campsites each night. − No more than 8 people and 4 pets per campsite. − Camping limit of no more than a total of 14 days per 28-day period in any park campground. − Quiet hours are from 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. − Pets must be kept on a leash. − Use existing fire rings for campfires. Burn only dead wood found on the ground. − Use the provided toilet facilities. − Do not drive nails into trees or hang lanterns against trees. − Public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and possession of alcohol by minors is prohibited. − Littering is prohibited. Dispose of trash in a bear-proof trash receptacle. − Avoid glass containers, use plastic or aluminum. − Respect all other park visitors and campers. Composting restroom facilities are wheelchair accessible. Directions: From U.S. Route 19 north of Beckley, take the Glen-Jean-Thurmond exit. Take an immediate left and go 0.5 miles to Glen Jean. Turn right and follow the signs for Thurmond (WV Route 25). Continue for 6 miles to a three-way intersection. Bear right and go 1.5 miles on this road. Take a right on the gravel road, just before the bridge crossing the New River. Continue past the boat launch to the parking area. Weather: Weather in the Appalachian Mountains can be unpredictable and may change quickly. Always be prepared for the possibility of sudden storms. Weather in the mountains is often cooler and wetter than the surrounding area. On average, the warmest month is July. The maximum average precipitation also occurs in July.
