IPadOS 17.7 is now available and the equivalents for other Apple products may also be available. Download are anticipated to be slow becuase this update was announced some time ago. Many people are anticipated to be using Apple’s servers.
iPadOS 17.7
Interesting! I thought iOS 18 updates were next. I'm going to try to wait for 17.7.1 for my Apple updates, unless I hear that there's an urgent security reason to update.
Lately though Apple's been pushing rapid updates, and not necessarily letting us wait for the inevitable .1 iterations that fix bugs in the previous version. They do that by giving us the same kind of A-B choice that parents are taught to give recalcitrant toddlers: not asking you if you want to update, but saying you can update right now, or we'll update you tonight--what would you prefer?

Looks like iOS18 and iPadOS 18 are now available...
...for devices that can support version 18. No I'm not seeing "update available" on my devices, but webpages are suggesting that 18 is now available for installation on iPhones and iPads that support it. Maybe iPadOS 17.7 is for older devices that won't support 18?

Might be dependent on the device. What I’m being offered or a 9th generation iPad is 17.7.

Time involved
IPadOS 17.7 was about a 12 to 14 minute process and was primarily a security update. 18.0 took about 28 to 30 minutes and added new features and improved on older features.

IOS 18 “manual”

As an engineer I was finally happy that Apple added a calculator, one variation even being a scientific version.

17.7.1 versus 18
Sort of like the parent-with-toddler model I was suggesting, last night, I did get offered iPadOS 17.7.1 as well as iPad 18 and the corresponding iPhone OSes as well.
It wasn't that one needed to update to 17.7.1 first before updating to 18, you could choose either one, if the device supported 18.
The way Apple put it actually made sense to me: if you wanted new features, understanding that it's early and it may be a little buggy, go for 18, but if you just want security updates and are willing to wait for 18.0.1 or 18.1, then just get 17.7.1. So I chose the latter. I'm in no rush for the features. And both the iPad and iPhone 17.7.1 updates are working well with no issues.

Apple pauses iPadOS 18 rollout for M4 iPad Pro
IPadOS 18 rollout paused. See https://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2024/09/apple-pauses-ipados-.... The pause has to do with the M4 iPad Pro after bricking complaints. Based on the wording I would think other devices are still being updated when requested.
Seems to be a serious bug for the M4 iPad Pro. Quoting from the linked content, “Apple is apparently offering hardware replacements to users who have been affected, which points to a pretty serious bug—usually devices can be put into recovery (or DFU) mode as a last resort in the event of a botched software update.”
Beta 4 of version 18.1 was released yesterday so anticipate 18.1 stable before too long.

I went for IOS18.0 on my IPhone 12 mini
It took about 40 minutes total for the download and install. I waited until the next morning to download the update to my wife’s SE (2nd gen). It took almost an hour just to download. There must have been a lot of folks going for the update. I have noticed a lot of new things about this update, but have had no issues with it.

Wow. iPad Pro M4's range in price from about $1000 - $2000 retail. That's an expensive screw-up.

New Apple updates
Put OS Sequoia on my wifes Imac. Everything was good. Then updated it to 18. Everything on the Imac was messed up. Email was not right. Safari had a blank screen and you could do nothing. Some things would print and others would not. Really messed it up.
Went back to Sequoia with a backup I had made and everything is normal again.
