More info: The North Fork American River originates near the crest of the Sierra Nevada, in eastern Placer County, 4 miles southeast of Squaw Valley. It flows nearly 50 miles from Mountain Meadow Lake (7,900 ft), commonly identified as its source, to join the Middle American River. It is designated wild Trout water from Iowa Hill Rd. bridge to Palisade Creek. A very clear stream in a remote, very steep canyon, that is moderate in gradient, with mixed large bedrock pools, riffles, and boulder field pocket water. Vegetation varies from foothill Oak woodland through Yellow Pine belt. Access upper reaches from Soda Springs Rd. south of Interstate-80. Most trails are 3-4 miles and drop about 2,000 ft.Watch for rattlesnakes. Campgrounds near trailheads.
