mighty amazon was down (photos and drive)

I use amazon photos and noticed my phone could not upload at around noon Tuesday. Computer and desktop app no different. The problem was not corrected until after midnight Thu. morning.

I had a very hard time substantiating there was any outage at all!

Found this website.

https://downdetector.com/status/amazon/

Maybe there are better ones, I never had any need before.

It's rather surprising they could be down 1 1/2 days with anything. Made me wonder, what recourse does one have if all your data is lost?!

On a professional level, I've seen rather large cos. OOB as a result (we're talking between 500m to just over 1 bil. revenue). There's a tendency for cos. who grew fast to not have covered a possibility of losing everything...

??

What is:

cos

OOB

Antonyms?

Same question here. shock question

Class Of Service Out Of Band

Class Of Service
Out Of Band

cos. OOB

I believe he meant "companies out-of-business."

"cos." is "companies" in the context of his post.

OOB is an acronym for many different things besides "out of band." https://www.allacronyms.com/OOB
In medical reports, for example, it's an abbreviation for [patient] "out of bed." But again in the context of the post, most likely "out of business."

Ah, so only one of the two originals is a TLA.

Screw amazon and google

Screw amazon and google photos. Run your own cloud without the worry of having google/amazon sort/catalog/scan your content.

https://nextcloud.com/

They have android/ios apps too.

A Few Acronym Explanations

PICNIC — Problem in Chair, Not in Computer

PEBCAK — Problem Exists Between Chair and Keyboard

RTFM — Read the "freaking" manual

ID10T — self explanatory (pronounced "eye dee ten tea")

I used Photobucket for

I used Photobucket for photos for a few years. First the free service then paid a modest fee for some extra space. Then one day Photobucket, having become the go to photo storage for free place, decided to hold everyone hostage and started charging an enormous amount of money to keep/get your photos back.

As a result I don't use clouds for storage anymore, I use hard drives, transfer whatever I need to them daily. Yes hard drives can fail, and I've had it happen, luckily a program I have was able to recover 98% of the drive. I don't trust any cloud services to both maintain my privacy and/or not get hacked or deleted someday.

amazin

as I was doing the garden yesterday (it's very small like 5x15) where I took off the top layer of weeds (like grass), I thought, shame i don't have any pics of what this was like when I moved in fall 2002. It was a HUGE vegetable and flower garden that I inherited. I could only do it 2003 and 2004, then it all went to heck.

I did own a digital camera back then, but it took pics to floppy disks! I remember taking pics with it in 1997 at times sq, and someone asked where's the film? I said it doesn't use any. They gave me a look as if I were high and walked away. So the only pics I would have are 35mm, I was never organized enough to put them into albums.

I too have many pics on Photobucket and can't even log in now. I used to post pics to forums using it.

My thing? I have a 64 gb iPhone Xs (the one I got for $249 new and thought it was a great deal, today I think you can always bogo), and over 30 gb are pics so I really can't take any more. that's why I let amazon handle the backup--I can now take as many pics as I want, let them upload, then delete almost all from my phone, keeping say 1/10. I really think it wasn't even until maybe 5-6 years ago that "everything" in public is captured on video. As mentioned, someone dared me at a parade so I shoved them (Go ahead push me, I have a camera deal). This was that person who vaped in my then 2 y.o. son's face and when called out, did it again.). I get it, do it today, I'm in cuffs. Just illustrating how times have changed rapidly.

Don't know how long ago you put the photos on the bucket but they completely changed, nearly nothing is freely hosted there anymore. As for transferring to a cloud, I do the same thing daily, but to my own personal external hard drives. I like total control over my images and other files.

Outage

I received an e-mail from Amazon apologizing for the outage, but I really had not noticed. Most of my photos are taken using my phone, and it backs up to Google automatically. I use Amazon Photos and Microsoft One Drive as redundant backups.

ha

I noticed and no apology lol

Reminds me of 2016 in the office.

"Did you go and get a free loaner car?"

"What free loaner car?"

"Because of Takata, anyone can get a loaner car if they want."

Go home and check the forum, and people are getting free loaners.

So I called 2 dealers, the one near my house said bring the car in, didn't feel like it, so they said they'd come to my house? lol

The other dealer said don't bring your car, just sign some papers and all set.

So I got a free loaner for 4 mos until the airbag could be replaced, and it got replaced again in 2020. Some had loaners for more than a year. Takata was a disaster.

Oh btw when I told the 1st dealer 2nd dealer said no need to bring the car in, they said that's not how it's supposed to work. If we don't verify the VIN, you may not even have the car anymore and you'll be driving a free BMW anyway! True, many people did that.
