When I was a kid, 9" of snow was not a given that school was canceled, sometimes it was, other times it wasn't...pretty sure bus drivers knew how to handle chains and the transmissions were all manuals.

Today school is canceled when snow is in the forecast. From a cost perspective, I wonder which way makes more sense.

Communication was not back then, what it is today, i.e. instantaneous (texts, emails, voicemails, all on blast to tell parents no school tomorrow).

When I was a kid we were glued to KYW radio as they announced the school closed or opening late numbers, mine was 452 IIRC. Loved hearing that number, meant a day of sledding and snowball fights.

Today's kids can still have school, from home. Thanks to COVID shutting everything down for a while schools learned how to use programs like see-saw, Google Classroom, Zoom, etc., to teach their students virtually over the internet.

My wife is a teacher and although the school building is closed, school is not, they were told to use the virtual program and teach that way today, and probably tomorrow.
