Picked up over an inch rain yesterday as the storms accompanying a cold front rolled through. We can use the rain. Maybe not delivered all at once though.

120 Degrees

Heading for 120 today here in Phoenix AZ Metro. Some airlines have already cancelled flights due to the reduced lift and poor engine performance.

All-time recorded high is 122, so we're getting close.

Nice weather here in MD today, a nice reprieve from the heat wave we had recently.

Hadn't thought about the reduced performance of jet engines. They compress the air but rely on thermal expansion of the gas for powering the fans. It wouldn't solve the reduced lift problem but you could mist (distilled/deionized) water into the intake on takeoff to reduce the air temperature and improve engine performance, especially since the humidity is generally so low out there ("it's a dry heat!").

I guess the reduced lift makes takeoff and landing dicey though so perhaps cancelling the flight is the smartest option...

A great week to all, and to all a great week!

Summer begins.

Official beginning of summer is 11:24 PM today. Very nice mild day today, but after last week with upper 90's and high humidity, I feel like we have already been through summer!

AC on the Blink

AC went out last night, repairman came out this afternoon and topped off the Freon and said I was all set. Last a couple of hours and now cycles between no AC and some AC. Guess it is another call in the morning.

Enjoy the week!

What Now?

Running out of things to say.

Weird Weather

We've had some weird weather the past couple of weeks. A tornado touched down northwest of here ten days ago (perhaps you saw the video of the guy mowing his lawn?), and another "possible" tornado occurred last night.

Although we get the occasional (weak) tornado, Central Alberta is not Tornado Alley. Weird!

Good morning.

You might be interested in this Forbes article on "The Science Of Why It's Too Hot For Some Planes To Fly In The Southwest U.S."
https://www.forbes.com/sites/marshallshepherd/2017/06/20/the...

Anyone who has drag-raced knows what heat, barometric pressure, and to a lesser degree, humidity does to engine performance (especially unblown engines). This is because the air's Density Altitude becomes much higher relative to standard conditions. This makes the air's density equal to what it is at that altitude under standard conditions.

If you don't believe this will also affect aircraft lift, here's an example of 'proof is in the pudding'. In 1989 a pilot took off from Cedar Rapids, IA, in a 4-seat aircraft on the way to Colorado Springs, CO. When he prepared to return to CR, he loaded the aircraft with the same passengers and cargo he left IA with. He didn't make it. Guess why! They listed 'inexperience in high altitude flying' as one reason for, "According to the report, the plane didn't climb high enough after takeoff to clear a utility pole a half-mile from the end of the runway".

There are several online Density Altitude Calculators available. Plug in 75 Degrees, check the Density Altitude. Then plug in 120 degrees, and check the Density Altitude. Huge difference.
