Yesterday i finally tried the osm map from the first post in "Free routable maps for garmin"
Now my almost ten year old never updated nuvi 300 is back in buisness! 
I could easily pick out a section of the world and 12 hours later the map was ready for me. The size has got to be under 2gb for my nuvi and the one i got was at 1,6 gb.
Everything worked smooth, it was just to put the map on the memorycard and after that everything works perfect.

We appreciated knowing that you were successfully. We celebrate in the successes of each other.
If you have the time, it would be helpful to others with older units if you would create a detailed account of the steps you went through to make your successful update happen. It would make a great FAQ.
