poi markers on gps screen

How do i start and stop notification of poi's on active Garmin GPS screen?

could be a couple of things

But we really need to know exactly what you want started or stopped. Is it the built-in POI that's part of the map data or are the custom ones you loaded?

The built-ins can be addressed through the info settings on your unit.

POI

This looks like a good place to ask this.
I have a Nuvi 2450 and I never see ANY pois on my screen. Do you have to turn them on? I sometimes see a small purple dot but no name and can't touch it to get a name.

Any suggestions?

Have you tried various zoom levels?

On my 765T, I have to be zoomed in to 250 Feet or less to have my custom Icons show up.

Try this. Turn on your 750 if it is still active (because it is like my 765), else the 2450. Press View map. Drag the map to an area where you know you have Custom POIs. You are likely at the "0.2 mi" zoom level. Now, press the "+" symbol until you get to a zoom level below 300 ft. You should see custom icons.

Let us know what you find, please.

I am on a poi at 50 feet. It does not tell me what the poi is just a gray dot with a pink square around it.
Put in simulation and it is the same. 50 feet, no words to tell me what the poi is. Just a gray dot with pink around it.

Thanks for the info. A "gray dot with a pink box around it" is something I do not see with my 765T for POI locations without a symbol associated with them. I see only a gray dot.

Do you alos see some gray dots? The pink box throws me. Is this pink box around all gray dots? What Icon were you expecting to see?

Given that you mentioned "no words", are we talking, perhaps, about alerts on POIs?

While just driving around....

While just driving around, all you should see are the icons (.bmp files) associated with various POI (.csv translated into .gpi) files. Since the Icon is 24 by 25 pixels, there won't be "words". If you do not have any .bmp files, you will see dots.

Now if you have alerts set, you will get the name of the upcoming POI in an oval.

I don't put icons

I only put in pois so that seems to be what I get with my pois. All is OK there.

mgarledge wrote:

Evidently your model doesn't have a control regarding the display of icons. On some units the built-in icon display can be controlled through a setting allowing you to select groups that will display. Yours doesn't appear to have this setting.

You can control the display of some icons using the POI GPX files as there is a statement you can add to your file that states if an icon, the icon and name or no information about the point is displayed. This control is for when you use the built-in icons.

@mgarledge, do you have a manual?

mgarledge wrote:

If not, go to
http://static.garmincdn.com/pumac//nuvi_2200_2300_2400_EN_OM...

and download it.

Maybe we can get a "symbol" for one of your "Favorites" to show up. Check that out.

Thanks but I do have a manual

I put McDonalds in my favorites and I can see a stickpin and the name.

Do you ever see any pois that are built in to your maps if they are not in favorites.

I guess I am going by the CoPilot I have on my Nexus 7.

As I drive down the street all POIs that are built in to the unit show up on the road.

Are favorites the only thing that shows on the map as you drive down the road.

POI Marks

Besides 24X25 When you save them try 256 colors - I had same problem with my 3790 when I save them at 256 colors they appeared (Thanks to Gary H.)

I am not tralking about the pois I make

I found out they have to be in Favorites to see them.

I am wanting to know if anyone can see icons or names for any of the build in pois as they are driving down the street

Sitting here at my computer, I did a simulation to an address about 2 miles away that takes me on a "main drag". I wanted to see what happens with built in POIs.

I set my zoom level to 200 feet and could see my Custom POI Icons. I touched the map with the eraser of a pencil and then saw the icons for the built-in POIs.

Ok, that much works on my 765. I will go out later and see what happens if I am just driving with the 765 on - but not on a route to somewhere. That may or may not be different

Thanks,

I don't have a 2450. I do have a 295w with a similar problem as your unit. When I zoom to 200 feet, my own customPOI icons show, but not the points of interest that Garmin supplies. They only show up in the "Browse Map" screen. The lady at Garmin was wonderful. She fired up her 295w and confirmed that this model has omitted that feature.
..This evening I played with both of my 14xx units. I can not make any of the POI icons go away at 200 zoom. Go figure.

Now that I know you are asking about the built-ins, it is configurable on my 885. I have them all turned off because it slows the refresh rate down considerably and contributes to the lockups from the processor being overloaded. The only custom ones that display are those that have alerts or are destinations. The custom POI show whenever the alert is triggered.

I looked several times for browse maps and there it is. Thanks, that is where I looked...must of had one eye closed.
Looking at brouse maps the only thing I see is gray dots outlined with pink where my pois are. There is no name and when I select still nothing.
Just did a Sim. Route and my poi at the end has a flag but no name. I do get voice announcements of the poi when I get there.
Here is a photo I put on my flickr page taken from Garmin. It is what they show when the advertise it. I guess it is the way it is suppose to be, no pois as I drive. I will try to find how to make alerts and see if that works

TourGuide may turn on your icons

Hi all, I have been following this thread. When I use TourGuide I only see Starbucks and Walmart icons, however I don't get Home Depot, Bank of America, Publix and Winn dixie icons. I also get all red light icons and alerts.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It's great that you want to see what is around you s far as places you might (key word MIGHT) want to visit but, a word of caution. Your unit's processor isn't the most owerful in the world, in fact I would classify it as pretty anemic. If you ask it to do too much, drawing your maps as they scroll, announcing directions, alerting you for important actions, keeping an eye on traffic and a host of other things IT WILL run out of gas very quickly. Trying to do too much with the unit at the same time will result in you turning from enamored with your new toy to complaints because it isn't doing what you want it to do. From your posts about displaying various icons on the map as you drive, it appears you are quickly reaching the limits of the device.

My advice, sit back and evaluate what's important. Do you really need every Walmart, McDonald's, Wendy's, Subway, Starbucks ad infinitem shown on the screen or do you just need to have them handy when you need to go there? Limit your alerts to what is important, that way your unit isn't overlaoded and you will be able to pick critical information from all the clutter of store announcements.

Would be cool to make a list

It would be really cool if you could pick from a list to choose which icons you want to select. I agree with some commenters in that I really wouldn't want all the icons.

I do have some POI files that I use for this purpose, but I don't know of a robust way to turn on the icons for simply all or specific POI files.

That seems odd

Brentr wrote:

What POI file format are you using? .csv or .gpx or a mixture?

Where did you get your .bmp files?

May we assume that you
1. have file names that include the character string "TourGuide" for six sets of POIs - Starbucks, Walmart, Home Depot, BofA, Publix and WinnDixie?
2. have associated with each of the six files a .bmp whose characters to the left of .bmp EXACTLY match the POI file name characters to the left of .csv/.gpx

Do you have sound alerts for any or all of the six POI files.

I cant copy the sound alerts for bank america etc

Hi for some reason I got the mp3 for starbucks and walmart and alerting me of these when I drive by them. I know that I copied them correctly. I no longer can copy the mp3 alert for other poi like winn Dixie, bank of America etc.
How do you copy the mp3 file to my garmin poi?
I am using windows 7.
Thanks in advance
PS I see icons for bank of America and other only when I have a route enabled.
I would like to get alerts and be able to see icons when I do not have a route enabled.Currently I get red light camera alerts, starbucks and walmart alerts.

Do you get your custom audio alert when you arrive if Winn Dixie or BoA is the destination of a route rather than just a location you drive by on the route? If so, it's probably because the WD and BoA POI locations are set back more than 50-75 feet from your street and your loading of a custom mp3 for your C550 is working well with POI Loader. As discussed in your School's thread here,

http://www.poi-factory.com/node/39621

you may need these POIs to be TourGuides to get an alert as you drive by as you successfully did with your Schools file. Just note that some feel that TourGuides use extra GPS processing power and may cause problems if two TourGuides may alert simultaneously and therefore we use them sparingly.

I'd check this potential cause for your non-alerts before looking to the actual mp3 files or their filenames that you're using and loading right now. If you don't get your desired alert when you arrive at a WD or BoA, then it's time to look at your mp3 files and filenames.

I think I'd go crazy driving a few miles through a city if I received an audio alert for each Starbucks I pass by. Besides redlights and speed cameras, I have an audio alert set for only two of my many POI files (one being a TourGuide, then other a regular POI). Your desire to have drive-by audio alerts for all custom POIs is not common among Garmin GPS users from what I read at this site.

I went crazy

When I first got my 765T and found this site, I got a number of POI files along with sounds and icons. I had them set to alert me when I drove past them. Well - it took only a day for me to decide that was not only not helpful, it sometimes startled me in an unsafe manner. Go listen to this Starbucks audio and you will see why http://www.poi-factory.com/node/20503

I now realize that I do not need to be normally "alerted" to anything around my own town so I do not even keep my GPS in my car - it sits beside me here at my computer.

Whenever I go on a trip, I do take my unit in whatever car I use so I will be alerted to things like cameras and rest areas.

The bottom line is that I wanted to know how to get alerts all the time. I learned how and decided that was too distracting. So, now I use them sparingly just as CraigW indicates he does.

Wow, after listening to that just once this afternoon, I'm not sure that I'll be able to fall asleep tonight.

I wonder just how much caffeine was in the system of the person who created that mp3.

Thank you, I think i got it fixed

OK after hearing what everyone had to say I became even more persistent in trying to get my icons to show up on the screen. However it would only show up when I have a route enabled. I use my GPS route enabled and unenabled every day. I don't mind it alerting me when I pass things, it just tells me that it is working. The problem I was having is that I could not remember how to get the actual mp3 alerts downloaded to my computer. So to all here is what I have to do if you are using windows 7.
1. click on sounds on the web page
2. find the sound you want to load and right click on it.
3. Put your mouse over the file and right click and select "save target as"
4.You can then select where you want the file to be placed( I have selected "My Garmin POI"
I then did TourGuide for all my files. I will be trying this out today and will report back to all.
Hope this helps.

Speed limits

Brentr wrote:

The ability of a Garmin GPS to display speed limits is built into the device. They are either displayed or not. StreetPilots do not offer speed limits.

The nuvi 350 and 650 can not display speed limits either, while the 750 can. I think the 7x0 series was the first to offer speed limits on major streets and highways.
