State Highway officials announced this fall that they wanted to redo the current plate witch is difficult to read, because of the raised number and the orange in the middle of the plate, with the new plate easy to read, even if the action was caught on cameras and toll's.
License Plate Designs
I have always found Florida plates easy to identify but difficult to read. The oranges give it a nice look.
But I am amazed by the diversity of license plates in many states. Montana, for example, seems to have dozens of different designs and colours - and some of them are pretty well illegible. I think you could get off a photo radar ticket with some of the plates outdoor themes.
Don't see the point ...
Florida has more specialty plates than you can shake a stick at. I think the new design must be just for the standard plate. I frankly don't see the point of the change with all those specialty plates.

Sounds like the cameras have a shortcoming if they can't properly read plates - after all, isn't that the one thing they're specifically designed to do? And if that's the case, how do they know that *any* of the camera tickets they issued are any good?

Pennsylvania has quite a few as well. In the difficult to read category, PA had one called "Flagship Niagara". At night it's reflective letters stood out nicely, but during the day you couldn't read the last couple letter/numbers from more than a car length away. The plate had white letters on a light colored background, how it ever passed muster is beyond me. Here's an example of one:

If someone is willing to pay extra for a plate showing what univesity they went to, what they're favourite recreational activity is, or what organization they belong to - go for it!
