Welcome

Start by listing what GPS you have, and then ask in the appropriate sub-forum if you have questions.

Welcome

Welcome to the site.

Since you are new, you may want to do a couple of the Beginner Exercises.

To make it easy, when you click on the first link below, hold down the "Cntl" key as you left-click. That will open a new "Tab" in your browser in the "Tab" bar. Click on that 'Tab" to do the first exercise - leaving the "Tab" you are now reading open and available to click on and return here.

The first link makes sure settings on your computer are such that you can do more advanced POI loading.

This next link helps you get a backup by attaching your GPS to your computer. (NEVER do anything to your GPS until you have a backup)

Tab?

So much easier using Mozilla Firefox, just right click a link and chose open link in a new tab. No need to remember which keys to click.

This isn't directed specifically at jgermann ...

....

I wish those things were called something other than "Exercises".

That word conjures up "work" to me. And this is supposed to be for fun.

And when we send new members immediately to do some "exercises", again it seems like we are saying that they should go do some "work" first.

I just wish we called it something different so that the connotation would be different. (Practice, Examples, ....)

Agree with MM

I have to agree with Motorcycle Mama. The content is good, but "Exercises" reminds me of an elementary school math teacher talking down to the children ... "Do the exercises on page 126, then we can go out to recess and play".

No offense intended jgermann. I appreciate all your contributions to POI Factory, including the "exercises" ... just wish you called them something else.

Quadrants

I because the way I travel divide the country into quadrants or 4 areas.
Anything from the Mississippi River and north of Interstate 80 is one area.
Anything south of I 80 and west of the Mississippi is the second area.
Anything north of I 80 East of the Mississippi is third area.
Anything south of I 80 and East of the Mississippi is the 4th area.
Before loading any file I check it and divide it if necessary to the proper quadrant.
All my poi's are on a SD card so the Garmin only loads the proper files and does not waste space.

I too agree with MM

Is like saying welcome to my house and here are the rules, take off your shoes to enter, if you need to pass gas step outside and on and on...

Whatever floats your boat Captain James T. Kirk just make sure you have all the photon torpedoes ready when you move to the next quadrant.

Welcome . . .

I'd suggest reading the "faq" page and checking through the POI files for something you like. Try downloading a few then installing them on your gps. Search the site for discussions with tips for how to keep them all organized on your PC for easy updates.

Good luck!
