We are considering a GPS for use in hiking and off road use. Does anyone have a suggestion on products they have used? It would be nice to have a good model with primary features without having to pay a premium price. Thank you in advance for your information.
I went with a Garmin eTrex Legend HCx
If you do as I do, be sure to get the HCx and not the HC since the "x" uses a more sensitive receiver to get a signal in forests and other areas with parts of the sky blocked.
If extra features are needed, the eTrex Vista HCx would be worth a look.
By adding a micro SD card, I was able to add the Arizona topo map at no extra cost. Other topos can be found at this site as well:

The x indicates a removable data card. The H indicates a High-sensitivity receiver.
Venture HC

I like my Venture HC. It has the high sensitivity receiver and costs quite a bit less than the x models that have a removable data card.
I simply load the map segments that I will be using on the next outings.
Darn

Darn, I knew I should have looked it up before speaking. Buy the "H"!
