Boy do I have egg on my face!

Well, do I ever have egg on my face. I've always said there was no way I'd have a built-in nav system.

On Saturday my wife and I went to "look at" the new 2011 Taurus Limited. The only one available in the area had the full nav system. We liked the car but I told the sales guy there was no way I wanted to pay for the nav system since it's idiotically expensive I already own 4 GPS units.

He explained that it's not just nav and actually integrates everything in the car into a single voice activated and touch screen activated unit. I stick a CD into the slot and tell it to "record" and it's saved to the hard drive. No more need to carry the CDs around once they've been saved. I works with the climate control, the radio, USB devices, etc. The screen also works with the back up camera when the car is shifted into reverse. The whole thing is billed as the Sync system.

I told him it was very cool and I liked the way it worked, etc. but I wasn't interested in paying $1,800 for the thing. He asked how I would feel if he dropped $1,000 of that off the price. Sigh....... We drove it home.

I've entered in all of my myriad office locations, hotels, etc. and can use voice commands to tell it to drive me to those places. The SYNC system seems to work quite well. It recognizes my voice commands just fine and gives me hands free control to do lots of things such as changing the temperature settings, changing music or devices, making and receiving calls, etc.

I was pretty much dead set against ever having a built-in nav system but I'm wiping egg off of my face today.

I'll definitely still be keeping my other GPS units. I love my 78s and nüvi 760. There's no way I'll give those up but I now have another system to play with.

A major thing that I don't like about the new setup is the inability to use all the great POI files from here. It also won't play content from audible.com which is another drawback. However, using the line-in port in the car, I can play that content from my nüvi 760. A marriage of two units. smile

I may get flamed for having the built-in system and also for buying a Ford although Ford is the only US car manufacturer that DIDN'T take government bailout money and the 2011 Taurus is very highly rated. So far, I freaking LOVE the car. It has multiple bells and whistles. Best of all, it made my wife really happy! A happy wife helps to make for a happy life. wink

I had a Taurus prior to my current vehicle - a Saturn Vue... since the whole Government Motors thing, GM is fighting Chrysler for the bottom of my list for my next vehicle. Enjoy the new "toy" and all it's toys. smile

Good Move

Congrats on your new car. I enjoyed your comment about Ford being the only US auto company that was forward looking enough to survive without a taxpayer bailout. Ford would definately be at the top of my 'look at' list if I were in the car market.

Precisely my sentiments, Ford is the only American vehicle I would consider buying, GM and Chrysler are off limits for me until they repay the loan, something I was much against when the government caved into the union extortion.

Congratulation on your new car purchase, the economy needs all the help it can get.

I too have a Taurus. Mine is a 2010. I don't have Nav, but I do have SYNC. This is another Microsoft FLOP.

Ford A+++

Thumbs up for getting the only US car company to not steal our money. Ford's done a great job with their cars and I have been eying the Mustang lately. Something I thought I would never do. This has been the closes for me in getting a Ford. I least I'm thinking about it. Time will tell.

Funny thing happened on the way to buy a Camry

Like thrak, I bought a Taurus. I research online to death a purchase like that and I was narrowing down my choice to Camry or Accord. Based on the options I was selecting and pages I was reading, the car sites were "also recommending" the Taurus. You know, like Amazon.com. "People who looked at this, also looked at this."

So I finally looked. Gee, this thing looked pretty impressive!

3.5L V-6 but gets 24/28 MPG.
6-speed auto trans balances good MPG and niiiice acceleration.
Highest safety ratings in it's class.
Lowest emission ratings in it's class.
Very roomy inside (I'm over 6 ft tall).
Large trunk (she packs a lot for our road trips).

And like the others mentioned, Ford was the only company that said "No thanks" when it came to taking our tax money.

Installed Navigation

I know a few people who have installed navigation, but still rely on their Garmin.

I like them.

I have a PT Cruiser and Town and Country, both Chrysler products, and I would not hesitate to buy a Chrysler product again, now or in the future.

However, I don't plan to buy another car for about 5 years.

Fred

I agree with Fred that you will be shocked at the update prices. I have a friend that has a Lincoln SUV and the nav update was 600 for the DVD and then a charge to install it. He found out later that maps were of the 2009 vintage being used for the 2010 update. Not a happy camper.

Owners Manuals

Congrats and best of luck on the new wheels !!!!!!! You can go here and download a PDF copy of your owner's manual. It's easier to reference then running out to the car to get the book out of the glove compartment.

Congratulations

Don't beat yourself up. You did what was right for you at the time. I was given a loaner car when I had my brakes done. The loaner had a nav system and I especially liked the back-up cameras. It is still not enough for me to get a car with an installed system but all the other integrated features are nice too.

stay happy

Bottom line...if the wife is happy, you will enjoy the day.

I got the 2011 Edge

I bought a 2011 Ford Edge about three weeks ago and it also has the Nav system and MySync. The navigation on the 2011 Fords is on a SD card, so I imagine an update will be to purchase the updated SD card. Price will probably be equal to the DVD, and updates are once a year.

So far I like the function of my Nuvi 3750 quite a lot better for navigating than the built in $y$tem in my Edge. But, I like the idea of getting in and pressing the voice command for weather, traffic, being able to find the nearest gas stations and their prices, and the list goes on. I still have a lot to learn but there sure are a lot of features to learn.

Oh, the Edge also is a pleasure to drive. And my wife, who hates Fords, is also very happy.

Not going to update

FZbar wrote:

Fred

I pretty much have no intention of updating the maps. I have lifetime updates on my nüvi. The map updates have never proven really critical in my experience anyway. They're "nice to have" but not really necessary.

I had a 64½ Mustang - the one without backup lights. I eventually sold it for $500. Boy do I wish I still had it now! My wife was drooling over the new Mustangs but I have a pretty bad back and I can't handle the seats in the car. If not for that, we may have ended up with a new Mustang instead.

Trial run

I was playing with the car yesterday. I told it to find a Safeway and it pulled up the 3 in my town. I told it to drive me home and it had very accurate directions - including taking the shortest and fasted route using a little street I often don't use. I kept "accidentally" missing my turns and it recalculated fine (without the annoying "recalculating" message!). It speaks the name of the streets and did it pretty accurately. When I got to the final turn it said to turn left on Primrose Lane (my street) and, in 50 yards, arrive at destination. That's actually better than my Garmin since it doesn't give that final detail about arriving in 50 yards.

I still love my Garmin but it's kind of fun playing with the voice commands on the Taurus and learning how the stuff works.

To those who are giving Ford credit by not accepting Government money I should point out that if they did they would have had to close some of their foreign plants (Mexico, Canada)and bring the jobs back to the USA and employ US workers under the rules set by the government.
GM by taking the money saved several hundred thousand jobs and many small companies that did business with GM. If you have been watching something other than Faux News you would know that GM has repaid over 6 billion of its loan, those employed people are paying taxes and not getting government unemployment checks payed by you. I think this bailout is working.

I have some land for sale at a great price...$600 for a DVD update????? I think he had better change dealers or his source.Ebay for $119. My Lexus update is only $199 and can be installed by me...you don't have to update them that often anyway in my opinion.

Somebody might oppose that, but...North american auto industry can survive only if we keep buying teir products...
I owned Ford once, it was very dependable car...only problem was fuel cnsumption too high and body corosion, otherwise...no problem car.
Then I switched to AUDI fuel consumption much better, body excellent, but everything else disaster, I have had never owned such a horrible car like that one was, I fixed one problem and before I could think, there was another.
Then I switched to GM cars and I drive those since and had no major problems except of first year after purchase...and that may be factor which drive people to buy imports, but during warranty problems were fixed free of charge and after that, I hardly know where dealership is...so, for me...North American cars only..

North American cars?

There is a difference in BUILT IN THE USA and ASSEMBLED IN THE UNITED STATES.
Toyota was ready to build a plant to assemble the Prius in the US but "The SHRUB" helped destroy the economy and that is on hold. Ford's answer to the Prius is assembled in Canada.

sorry, if it was not clear enough for some...

And my old Buick Regal was made in Canada. I give up trying to "buy American". There is no such thing any more. Even when they are built here, there's lots of non-American parts. I could care less where the ownership is. To me, that's irrelevant. Where are the jobs? At the Nissan factory in Tennesee? In my book, that's what really matters.

You do realize the reason their cars are assembled here is so they can limit the number of American cars that have to be let into their home country don't you?

Illiterate? Write for free help.

What's good for General Motors is good for the USA

My first car was an old Chevy Caprice. After a brief love affair with a TR-6, I have been firmly back in the GM fold for over 30 years.

I don't understand why the resentment for the auto bailout after the removal of banking regulations in 2000 made the large, greedy banks and Wall Street even more out of control to the point where credit that runs our economy dried up and the auto industry and many thousands of jobs were at risk.

Because of the dependability of GM products that have worked well for me for over 12 years and 100,000 mi. each, I won't be in the market for another GM product for five more years. It will take more than politics to get me to switch brands.

blah

Well, since its part of the Ford Sync system, i'd say it really doesnt count as a built in nav system.....i wouldnt fault you for buying a cassette deck for your car if it was part of the same system...(is it btw?)

However, it DOES sound like a neat system, would be fun to play with. ANd htere's nothing stopping you from buying/using a stand alone GPS. How "discreet" is the system? aka, do you know if the components are separeate? and can be replaced separately if one piece fails?
