Redlight Camera File Suggestion

Although I love the new BETA Red Light Camera file, I have trouble seeing some of the addresses on my Nuvi 4.3 inch screen. If I had a Nuvi 3 inch screen the problem would be even much more apparent. After doing a little testing by changing a few street names having just the first letter be a CAPITAL letter, then using small letters for the rest of the name, I can see 25% to 30% more of the street names. I also would see more info if more abbreviations were used.

for example:
NORTHWEST to NW, (plus all other combinations)
ROUTE to Rte,
HIGHWAY to Hwy, (yes, I know some are already changed)
LANE to Ln,
BEACH to Bch,
WEST to W,
NORTH to N,
EAST to E,
SOUTH to S,
Martin Luther King to MLK (I'm hoping most of us are awake enough when they drive to see MLK and then apply that to the street sign of Martin Luther King)smile)
STATE HIGHWAY to ST Hwy,

On Line 1971 of the Beta File you will find this:
STATE HIGHWAY 161 & STATE HIGHWAY 114
It actually could look like this below:
ST Hwy 161 & ST Hwy 114

Anyone else think they might be helped by making these changes to the file?

State Highways

Aren't State Highways properly named SR or State Route?

One Line 1971 of the Beta File you will find this:
STATE HIGHWAY 161 & STATE HIGHWAY 114
It actually could look like this below:
ST Hwy 161 & ST Hwy 114

Other than that nit, what you propose is good and reasonable.

Beta File?

I saw a Beta file when going to d/l the latest red light camera file and wasn't sure which to choose. I was wondering what the difference btw. the Beta file and the regular file is?

I have to make changes like this to the file. Right now it is low priority. I will eventually get to it.

Why ask?

Isn't it easier to open them up and check out the difference? Or better yet, load the Beta and do a test run thru an intersection with RLC. Notice anything different?

Just started testing.

Just loaded the beta version last night. I will be testing it today. I'll see if I have the same issue with the display.

I believe all of your suggestions make sense, not only for size, but it will probably be easier to read.

PS I really like the concept of this beta.

Excel Solution

Here is a possible fix for those who have Excel:

1) open the beta version in Excel
2) Insert a new column (D?)
3) Enter In the new column cell D1: =proper(C1)
4) Copy this function to D2 thru D???
5) Use copy/paste special to convert formula to text (select Values on Paste special box)
6) Use copy/replace to convert Rlc to RLC (select Match case check box)
7) Delete column C
8) Save file

Let me know if you need more details

This will covert all CAPS to Normal text

Not sure if it matters, the double quotes are gone after saving the file. Here's how it looks (coordinates omitted):

Before
"RLC - HWY 99 & 196TH","WA Lynnwood poi-factory Jul08 09"

Double quotes are not needed

I believe the double quotes are not needed unless you have a comma in the description. The double quotes are usually there to avoid breaking a field into another column when a comma is present.

Thanks DRMCMTR. I wonder how to leave those double quotes intact if we use Excel to modify and save.

How did the test go and did you have the same issues?
Also, I agree, reading would be easier.

Testing went well

Sorry for being so slow with my results.

Well, I haven't run into a redlight that did not fit on my screen, but could see that combinations of long names will be puching the boundaries of my Nuvi 760. I think abbreviations and first letter captialization will be easier to read.

DRMCMTR wrote:

Please read your mail and reply. I was waiting to see if the file had been changed to contain both Caps and small letters this week but unfortunately it remains in its ALL CAPS FORMAT because of its low priority.

Lets talk in Email.
Thanks

Help?

Did you want help doing this? or is it already done?

I have a bunch of utilities that could help CamelCase the data and abbreviate the terms.

I can also tell what entries would go over a certain limit, say like 40 characters?

So far, by shortforming the following I've got the file down to only 28 entries over 40 characters long:
Highway - Hwy
Northbound - NB
Southbound - SB
Eastbound - EB
Westbound - WB
Route - Rte

Sample data:

-75.77608,39.66557,"RLC - Christina & Elkton","De Newark Poi-Factory Jul22 09"
-75.74103,39.60568,"RLC - Pulaski Hwy & Summit Bridge","De Newark Poi-Factory Jul22 09"

Wow, that was quick:))) If you needed to, you could also delete the space & the - right after RLC too. Maybe that would save some more screen real estate. Would you mind sending me the file in that format if you've already done it? I'd suggest sending it also to Jon and Miss Poi, as they might find that would save them some "maintenance time" too.

Thanks for your interest.

Update

OK got it down to 20 that are over 40 characters.

I've also been cleaning up some odd looking entries, going to maps.google to get the right street names.

when I'm done, where would you like me to post it.

Question, is there a different between US-Hwy xx and US-Rte xx? I've seen this in a couple of places...
e.g.

-94.35002,32.5517,"RLC-US-Hwy-59 East End & Texas 4","Tx Marshall Poi-Factory Jul22 09"
-94.35182,32.5269,"RLC-US-Rte-59 & Pinecrest","Tx Marshall Poi-Factory Jul22 09"

edit: sent Miss POI e-mail about new file
By removing changing "RLC - " to "RLC-" got it down to 11 > 40 char

Final Update

OK I've gone through the whole file and corrected a bunch of naming errors and also standardized things like Rt to Rte and put a - between things like Hwy-99 and Rte-45 and I-209.

I've been able to get all lines to less then 40 Chars.

The file that I converted was from today, OK yesterday now smile

Miss POI - Let me know where I can load it for your review.

If you need it I can also send you the list of differences between my edited file and the original.

Oh, and just in case it wasn't obvious, I'm open to any change requests. smile
