Chatty Charley thread for the week of January 28th 2008

This is the place to talk about things that are not gps related, you can discuss whatever you would like, as long as it is clean. Remember we have families that have their children involved in the GPS fun and we don't want to make parents feel uncomfortable when their children ask what that word means.

Have fun...

This thread will be closed on Monday and a new one will be opened.

What would you do?

You stop at a Red Light (with a Red Light Camera), waiting for it turn green. An emergency vehicle is 10 cars behind you, have it light on and siren on. What would you do?

Recalculating...

Dang - it is still Monday

taking the Garmin on my trip

I won't try to take it on the plane (not sure of Southwest's policy), but will take it to Phoenix.
We are planning to drive from Phoenix to my daughter's home in Tucson. It's a new development, so I'm going to find a supermarket or something that's closeby.

I guess it's a two hour trip. We're getting in at 7 pm so it'll be a night drive.

Will let ya know how it goes.

P.S. Did I say "Go Pats"? Go Pats!!

and let the emergency vehicle get around you.

If, for instance, the ambulance is trying to pass on your right, the worst thing you could do would be to pull over to the right.

Phoenix to Tucson

is about two hours, depending on which part of Tucson. It's mostly flat, straight, boring drive, especially at night. But I bet the area has grown since I was there.

You did get the second GPSr, didn't you?

hmmmm

what does the law say about this? there has to be a loophole somewhere, but would the traffic people believe you and or show the film that proves what was going on?

anyone know anything?

=)

You jump out of your car, go in front of your car, wave your arms and hands at the red light camera, and smile when the ambulance set the camera off.

red light

That would really bite to get a red light ticket for an emergency vehicle. Kinda funny though.....honest judge it wasn't me it was the other guy.....LOL!!

Get out the way

This actually happened to me a few weeks ago. I was the lead car in a pack sitting behind a red light, heard sirens blaring and saw an emergency vehicle trying to come down the driver side but was stuck--I knew I had to move in order to free up the pack behind me. There was a brief moment when I thought, crap, I don't know if this is a red-light camera. That thought passed and I moved, and the emergency vehicle was able to make it through the intersection. I haven't seen a ticket in the mail yet but I think I did the right thing.

On a side note, I am always amazed that many people do not know how to react to lights and sirens on the road or the highway. Coming out of the Licoln Tunnel, I actually witnessed a car that was being followed by a police car and would not move--just kept driving faster and faster. Unbelievable.

Emergency Vehicles

This happened to me by my office, luckily the fire trucks have the ability to trip the light to green. Just before I moved it changed. This is the same intersection that two co-workers have recieved tickets and the photos clearly show the light was Yellow and they got the tickets dismissed

Get out of the way? NO!

Didn't know if it was a red light enforced intersection? Red light cams are VERY large and VERY obvious.

You are not required to "get out of the way" of an emergency vehicle but to "yield" to an emergency vehicle. If you are stopped, you are yielding. If you "get out of the way" which way? You may pull straight into an onrushing emergency vehicle. You don't read minds of the drivers in these vehicles. They WILL find a way to maneuver around traffic if the traffic will only not move while they are trying to do it.

Every Second Counts

If you are legally stopped but are effectively blocking the emergency vehicle (in this case an ambulance) from being able to get through, you are not yielding. The ambulance pulled up to the back of the line of cars behind me and sat there for a few seconds with his lights and siren blaring--he was NOT able to find a way around us. I can't read minds but I employ a little something I call "common sense." I was not pulling over into oncoming traffic, merely to the half-shoulder of a T-shaped intersection, single lane of traffic in both directions--this allowed the spacing required for all the cars behind me to do the same thing. That then allowed the ambulance to pull through. He had his lights and sirens blaring, which to me means, "everyone pay attention, and those who are in my way, get the heck out the way." IMHO every second counts when there is an emergency, but obviously you must use your own common sense to decide what to do at that intersection if you are confronted with the same choices.

I've been driving in the New York Metro area my whole life and this has always been the expected behavior of cars whether it is on local streets with traffic lights or on the freeway. Whether you are on the FDR or on Broadway, the GW or the Tappan Zee, there is simply not enough space for an emergency vehicle to weave through traffic without a little help from the vehicles that are in its way.

On the flip-side, I have seen emergency vehicles, with lights and sirens, have to sit and wait in bad traffic, all because people were unwilling to shimmy over to the left or right and potentially lose their place in the traffic queue. IMHO this is selfish and ridiculous.

smaller cams

maybe you just haven't seen some smaller cams??

the first ones a few years back were HUGE, but i've seen some recently that just kinda looked like a street light, and was really hard to notice, of course my garmin alerted me from the files I downloaded here =)

Yes some are smaller

The 1st cameras in my area were obvious, but newer ones not so much. I find it funny that when the 1st redlight cameras went into the Portland area everyone was so angry that they made the city put up these signs warning drivers of the upcomming camera. the funny part was that the camera was bigger than the sign! smile lol

snow

I'm done with the snow so if we get any more here in western MI i'm just going to e-mail to all of our members in the warmer areas of the country.wink

JUST A JOKE ... couldn't resist!

Hillary and her driver

Hillary and her driver were cruising along a country road one
evening when an ancient cow loomed in front of the
car. The driver tried to avoid it but couldn't - the aged bovine was
struck and killed.

Hillary told her driver to go up to the
farmhouse and explain to the owners what had happened. She stayed in
the car making phone calls to lobbyists. About an hour later the
driver staggered back to the car with his clothes in disarray. He
was holding a half-empty bottle of expensive wine in one hand, a
rare, huge Cuban cigar in the other, and was smiling happily,
smeared with lipstick.

"What happened to you," asked Hillary?

"Well," the driver replied, "the farmer gave
me the cigar, his wife gave me the wine, and their beautiful twin
daughters made passionate love to me!"

"My God, what did you tell
them?" asked Hillary.

The driver replied, "I just stepped inside
the door and said, I'm Hillary Clinton's driver and I've just killed
the old cow. The rest happened so fast I couldn't stop it."

The old cow. Good one!

The old cow. Good one!

There's nothing between now and March Madness!

Well, pitchers and catchers report to camp on 2/14 ... at least we get the hope of baseball then.

MLB Opening Day is March 25 this year, and then we have the Master's starting April 2.
