POI Database v2 - Beta

I'm almost ready to release a new version of the POI Database for beta testing. My main goal for this update is to make it easier for average users to add locations to a POI file.

Key features in this new version:

- Any registered user can submit (suggest) new locations for a poi file using a web form.

- A peer review process facilitates approval / acceptance of newly submitted locations.

- Tracks a "credited user" for each location in a poi file; automatically shows a list of everyone who submitted locations, visible on the poi file page.

There's quite a bit of programming behind these improvements, and I expect we'll find some bugs as we go through testing. There also are many features that would be nice to have but aren't in the program yet.

If all goes well, I plan to install this on the web site early next week. We'll start the beta test process by importing a few of the older CSV files into the new tool. Then, it will probably take a week or two to get everything tested and working as expected.

I’ll be looking for some of our more experienced users to be involved as “General Maintainers” -- helping to cleanup imported data, review locations submitted by other users, and identifying changes that need to be made in the tool.

Stay tuned for updates when I get it installed on the site.

Hey JM sound pretty cool to me.. Sounds like you'll need some guinea pigs to test it out. If you feel I am up to the task I'll give it a shot..

New to the site

I;m new to all of this, but very impressed at what I have been able to do thus far. This seems like a real community of people that help one another. Thanks Very Much for the site. I'm not sure how to add POI's to the site yet, but can contribute through Paypal, and it's worth every penny.

Thanks Again, and see ya on the road.

Having a peer review is

Having a peer review is great idea! A few times I was sure I was the first one using a posted POI since they would not even load due to syntax errors. Also I tend to find lots of formating problem converting to .gpx files to view with MapSource. I would like all files to be "POIEdit Friendly", meaning can be converted to .gpx and loaded with MapSource.

Initial testing

I converted a few files over to the new database today, and Miss poi has been putting it through its paces:

Boston Metro Attractions
Boston Police Stations
Charlotte NC NightLife
Nashville Points of Interest
Tulsa Area Restaurants

We found a couple bugs this afternoon that need fixing. I expect we'll be able to open up the maintenance tools to more users for testing later this week.

Let me know....

if I can be of any help.

updates

Miss poi and I converted a few more files over to the new database:

National Car Rental (Airport Locations)
Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf
IKEA USA & Canada
Florida State Park Camping Grounds
EXPO Design Center USA
New Hope, PA dining
British Columbia Coastal Region
Washington, DC - Metro Attractions
Paintball Sites - United States
Updated virginia beach restaurants an Lodging
Lake Norman, NC, POI's

We did some cleanup of the data, and these files can now be downloaded in GPX or CSV format. I fixed some bugs and made a few "must-have" improvements based on feedback from Miss poi.

Now we're working on Cracker Barrel to see how well the tools work with a larger file.

If anyone out there is a RegEx guru and wants to help write some parsing routines for address and phone numbers in slushy CSV notes fields, feel free to drop me a note. In the pilot tests, we've ended up parsing a lot of records by hand.

Great Idea!

I'll be glad to help if I can. I'm new at POI file structure as you know from my E-mail to you last evening with my CSV file of NC State Parks. Maybe I'm the one to find the problems since I'm not sure what I'm doing most of the time!

where can I get the coffee bean file at? I saw one on here but it looks very old(2006)

.

If you find locations that are not in the file you can send them to me and I will make sure they get added.
